POSITION SUMMARY
The Traffic Technician performs technical duties in the fabrication, installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signs and markings.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Performs fabrication, installation and maintenance of all traffic signs and posts.
- Designs signs in house as needed using Gerber Graphics & Sign Cad software.
- In house Fabrication of signs using Graphtec sign Plotter.
- Assist managing shop inventory.
- Fabricates and installs permanent and temporary signage for special events.
- Performs lane marking layout, installation, removal, and painting of pavement markings such as stop lines, crosswalks, turn arrows and lane lines.
- Works with inlay / overlay plastic tape, pre-formed thermoplastic and waterborne paint.
- Operates sign removal & installation truck.
- Operates bucket truck.
- Operates and maintains painting equipment.
- Operates and maintains roadway grinding equipment.
- Set up / maintain traffic control per MUTCD while working in city ROW.
- Performs maintenance and installation of city owned school flasher beacons.
- Performs maintenance, installation and programming of city owned electronic speed limit signs.
- Keeps accurate records relating to traffic activities, problems and repairs relating to signs and markings, and traffic signals.
- Ability to be available and work after hours and weekends for traffic on call in annual scheduled rotation as required.
- Keeps accurate records relating to traffic activities, problems and repairs relating to signs and markings.
- Assist with maintaining proper operation of school zone safety flashers.
- Assist with maintaining inventory of signs and markings equipment and material.
- Responds to after hour emergencies when on-call. Repairs malfunctioning, knocked down, or inoperable traffic regulatory device applicable.
Other Duties & Responsibilities
Performs other duties as assigned and required.
- Ability to be available and work after hours and weekends on call for snow plowing activities as necessary.
- Tree trimming as required to maintain visibility of traffic control devices and signs.
- Maintaining a clean and orderly shop.
PREPARATION AND TRAINING
Education: High School Education or GED
Work Experience: Preferred, 1 year of sign and marking experience or any equivalent combination of education, training and relevant job experience may be substituted.
Certifications and/or Licensures: IMSA Work Zone Safety Certification (within 6 months of hire), IMSA Signs & Markings Technician level I (or obtain within 12 months of hire)
Required Driver’s License: Valid Driver’s License; Class B CDL (or obtain within 6 months of employment)
An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant job experience may be substituted.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge
Working knowledge of:
- Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices
- The safe operation of aerial devices
- Fabrication, repair and installation of traffic control devices
Skills and Abilities
Computer skills - Strong skills needed for record keeping and sign design using Cartegraph and Omega software.
Communication - Basic customer service skills needed to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, peers, City administrative staff, other City employees and representatives of major vendors, community organizations, institutions, other governmental agencies and the general public.
Analytical - Strong skills needed to evaluate field equipment for repair.
Mechanical - Strong skills needed to operate metal cutting-shear and acetylene torch. Must be able to operate air compressor, jackhammer, small hand tools, airless paint equipment, and bucket truck.
Mathematical - Basic skills needed for crosswalk layout.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is performed primarily outdoors and occasionally in the shop. The employee is exposed to various weather conditions including wet, hot and cold conditions. Also exposed to various environmental conditions which may include excessive noise, dust, fumes, street traffic and materials used in traffic maintenance such as paint and chemicals.
HOURLY RATE
$25.21 - $37.82/hour
