Position Summary

The Equipment Operator I or II performs basic to skilled manual labor and basic to advanced heavy equipment operation as part of a work crew in the maintenance, repair and construction of city streets and related infrastructure. The equipment operator II may lead a small crew in the absence of an Equipment Operator III or Lead Equipment Operator. It is a requirement of this position to work overtime and be on call for emergency work.

Work may be performed near moving machinery, moving mechanical parts and in heavy traffic.

Duties And Responsibilities

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintains existing roadways, alleyways, storm drains, ditches and city facilities through the use of machinery, hand and power tools and the operation of basic construction equipment.
- Equipment Operator I: Operates tandem axle dump trucks, snow plows, spreaders. graders, plate compactors, asphalt rollers, small rollers, concrete saws, crack sealers, back pack blowers gas and electric powered equipment and hand tools.
- Equipment Operator II: Operates grades on roto-mill, hydra hammer, front end loader, backhoes, bucket trucks, tandem axle dump trucks, snow plows spreaders, graders, plate compactors asphalt rollers, pavers, concrete saws, crack sealers, tractor mower, backpack blowers, gas and electric powered equipment and hand tools.
- Removes debris and weeds from alleys, trims trees and limbs, hauls road base and other necessary materials from asphalt, sand or gravel facilities, and transport to job site including occasional mountain driving to haul and stockpile supply of materials used for routine maintenance and as needed by other departments.
- Performs daily CDL pre- and post-trip vehicle safety inspections, records information in a vehicle inspection log, in order to identify safety issues. Equipment Operator II also services assigned equipment and performs routine maintenance and emergency repairs. Reports mechanical problems for shop repair.
- Completes necessary paperwork and electronic entry in Cartegraph at end of shift regarding work orders completed and time and location spent on assigned tasks. Equipment Operator II also monitors and assists the work of Equipment Operator I acting in a lead capacity in the absence of Equipment Operator III or Lead Equipment Operator.
- Collects trash from containers on major city corridors to insure safety for citizens and cleanliness of City property.
- Operates backhoe and street sweeper occasionally or on a training basis to maintain existing roads and alleyways.
- Equipment Operator II also performs problem solving for work crews encountering difficulties. Conducts proper delegation of workers and materials as needed and assures quality communication and teamwork between crewmembers.
- Removes ice and snow from streets operating snowplow trucks, sanders, front-end loaders and motor graders to assist in the safe flow of traffic. Cleans roadways after storms using street sweepers to avoid and deter safety hazards associated with public travel.
- Paints barricades and bridges to assist in safety of citizens, keep bridges from rusting and eliminate excessive repair.
- Sets up traffic control devices, and flags traffic.
- Installs new manholes and storm drainage systems, by use of cement mixer, backhoe and shovel, for the prevention of flooding and to facilitate proper drainage.
- Assists other departments in completion of tasks they are not equipped to perform.

Education
- High School completed or GED preferred
- Streets Equipment Operator I: Minimum three (3) months of construction work, asphalt work, or equipment operation preferred.
- Streets Equipment Operator II: Minimum two (2) years as Equipment Operator I or an equivalent combination of formal education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position. Including the proficient operation of an asphalt patch truck, single/tandem dump trucks (including snow plowing), loader, skidsteer, roller and street sweeper.

- Streets Equipment Operator II: CDOT Flagger Certification within 6 months of hire.
- Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License within 6 months of hire (paid for by the City)
