The employee enforces city leash laws and investigates or responds to animal control related complaints and calls. Locates and informs owners of code requirements. Ensures owners remain in compliance. Captures and transports animals to proper facility, maintains electronic records and completes forms and reports. Coordinates with veterinarians and county health department. Performs other duties as assignedA. Enforcing Laws
B. Service Calls
1. Enters and maintains electronic data and hard copies; compiles data and
completes a variety of reports including a monthly activity report.
2. Maintains statistics on all activities.
3. Develops forms as needed.
4. Ensures sufficient equipment, supplies, medication and forms are available to
conduct activities; orders as needed.
- Enforces leash laws, receives radio calls/complaints.
- Advises public about the leash laws and consequences of violations.
- Issues verbal, written warnings, citations and obtains arrest warrants as required.
- Catches stray dogs, transports and impounds as needed.
- Destroys dangerous animals as needed.
- Investigates animal cruelty complaints; completes reports; photographs scenes, seizes/removes animals as needed, and initiates criminal charges as warranted.
- Investigates animal bite cases; prepares reports, effects quarantine of animals or destroys animal as the situation requires.
- Works with and assists state health department officer to identify rabies cases; collects and transports evidence for processing.
- Works with physicians of animal bite victims, keeps them informed of progress of case and coordinates activities with health department.
- Collects, maintains and processes evidence for animal abuse cases; works with district attorney's office.
- Testifies in court as required.
B. Service Calls
- Picks ups unwanted dogs and cats and takes to contract veterinarian for sheltering.
- Picks up dead animals from road ways and disposes of as required.
- Picks up, transports and disposes of dead animals that have been euthanized by veterinarians.
- Sets up animal rescue situations; sets and baits, traps and/or tranquilizes a variety of animals such as dogs, alligators, raccoons, opossums, snakes, cats, etc.

- *Knowledge of safe methods of approaching a sick or injured animal.
- *Knowledge of capture techniques including carrying and transporting animals.
- *Knowledge of city codes relating to work responsibilities.
- *Skill in using muzzles and other equipment to handle animals.
- Writing skills to accurately and neatly fill out forms and reports.
- Reading skills to read addresses, maps, directions and training materials.
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers and the general public in person, over the telephone and by two-way radio.
- Ability to operate a computer to enter and retrieve data and produce reports.
- Ability to operate a light truck.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- Ability to pursue and impound stray animals.
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time in all types of weather conditions.
- Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent and two to three years of experience working with animals preferred; however, any combination of education, training and experience which provide the qualifications listed above will be considered.
- Ability to complete all required animal control officer training.
- Ability to work non-standard hours including weekends and holidays.
- Possess a valid Alabama driver's license.
- Must be able to report from portal to portal within twenty minutes in an emergency situation and/or standby situation.
- Must meet the City of Enterprise physical standards which include drug and alcohol testing.
