What are the responsibilities and job description for the Service Worker I position at City of Enterprise, AL?
This position is responsible for participating in the installation, maintenance and repair of the water system. An incumbent in this position may be designated “Service Worker II.”
MAJOR DUTIES
- Maintains and repairs water lines.
- Installs new services and meters.
- Locates and repairs leaks.
- Assists in the repair of fire hydrants.
- Replaces broken meter boxes or lids.
- Replaces broken valve boxes.
- Maintains and repairs department buildings and facilities.
- Maintains and repairs well houses.
- Maintains and repairs water meters and meter heads.
- Assists in locating water lines as requested.
- Maintains tools, trucks, and equipment.
- Able to be On-Call after business hours to include weekends, weekdays, and Holidays.
- Performs related duties.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Water System Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

CONTACTS
- Contacts are typically with coworkers, customers, vendors, contractors, and the general public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
May be called on to be team leader.
- Knowledge of department safety policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of area streets and roads.
- Knowledge of water system maintenance principles.
- Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles and equipment.
- Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
- Skill in problem solving.
- Skill in interpersonal relations.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Possession of a high school diploma or GED.
- Ability to work outside in various weather conditions – cold, wet, hot, etc.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Ability to be on-call as needed.
- One to two years of related work experience preferred or sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position.
- Ability to perform tasks that may require sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping.
- Ability to lift light and/or heavy objects.
- Ability to use tools or equipment that require a high degree of dexterity.
- Ability to work well with others.
