What are the responsibilities and job description for the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Trainee position at City of Enterprise, AL?
This is an entry-level trainee position in the Wastewater Treatment Plant, learning the City’s water treatment system as an effort to prepare for licensing as a certified wastewater treatment operator.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Monitors and inspects treatment plants, pump stations, equipment, and operations for safety.
- Inspects and ensures all components in the treatment process are operating properly, makes adjustments and service or repairs as needed.
- Monitors dissolved oxygen and the pH levels using handheld probe and meter.
- Monitors plant operations to ensure discharged water meets ADEM standards.
- Assists with minor building maintenance such as painting and power washing and maintains equipment.
- Cleans clarifiers.
- Prepares and completes various forms, reports, logs, charts and other documents.
- Responds to calls from the public concerning problems, complaints or emergency situations.
- Serves as after-hours point of contact as needed.
- Tests generators weekly to ensure a standby power source to facility.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
Wastewater Treatment Operators assign work in terms of division goals and objectives. The supervisor reviews work through observation of divisional activities.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include ADEM regulations, EPA regulations, permit requirements, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

- Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, representatives of state and federal agencies, engineers, vendors, contractors, and the general public.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
- Knowledge of wastewater treatment principles, operations, and equipment.
- Knowledge of wastewater collection system operation, repair, and maintenance principles.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices involved in the operation of pumps, chemical feeders and other electrical and mechanical equipment
- Knowledge of laboratory procedures.
- Some knowledge of mechanical and electrical maintenance and of equipment and tools used for such maintenance.
- Ability to operate machinery and equipment.
- Ability to read meters and charts accurately.
- Ability to maintain records and reports.
- Ability to understand and follow detailed laboratory and plant operating procedures.
- Ability to perform mathematical computations accurately.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, dischargers and general public.
- Possession of a high school diploma or GED.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Possession of a Wastewater Operator III certification within twenty-four (24) months of successful completion of probationary period.
