*Overview:*
Under the direction of the Public Works Maintenance Services Supervisor, the Maintenance Worker II performs heavy manual labor, including unskilled and semi-skilled tasks, in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, storm drains, and water and wastewater systems. This journey-level position requires independent judgment and initiative while following policies and procedures.

*Examples of Duties:*
- Load and unload supplies, handle heavy objects, and use hand tools and maintenance equipment such as tractors and dump trucks.
- Assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of public works systems.

*Knowledge Required:*
- Principles and practices of maintenance for City infrastructure and facilities.
- Operation of hand tools, vehicles, and equipment.
- Traffic control procedures and safety regulations.
- Record-keeping and basic computer skills.
- Customer service techniques for interacting with the public and vendors.

*Required Abilities:*
- Perform maintenance and repair work on streets and water systems.
- Operate specialized maintenance equipment.
- Locate underground utilities and troubleshoot maintenance issues.
- Read and interpret construction drawings.
- Maintain accurate logs and documentation.
- Follow policies and work instructions.
- Communicate effectively in English.
- Build positive working relationships.

*Education and Experience:*
Equivalent to the twelfth grade and three years of experience in municipal maintenance or repair of facilities, water and wastewater systems, or parks.

*Special Requirements:*
- Valid California Class C driver’s license; Class B is highly desirable.
- Possession of a Grade T-1 Water Treatment Operator Certificate and/or Grade D-1 Water Distribution Operator Certificate is required. Additional certifications are desirable.

*Physical Demands:*
Must have the mobility to work in the field, strength for medium to heavy physical labor, and the ability to lift 75 pounds or more. The role involves frequent walking and operation of construction equipment.

*Work Environment*
Employees work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspaces, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. They also interact with challenging public and private representatives, contractors, and other City staff while enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

*Benefits*
Escalon offers six health care plan options through Anthem Blue Cross, Kaiser Permanente, or Sutter Health PPOs. The city pays up to $2,050 a month for employee and family health premiums. High-deductible health Plans with a Health Savings Account (HSA) are available. The city contributes a portion of the annual deductible to the employee’s HSA. A health care waiver option of $500 a month is applied to employee deferred compensation 457B retirement plans.
The city pays 100% of premiums for dental, chiropractic, and vision for both employees and their families. Life/AD&D and long-term disability are covered for employees, with additional voluntary Life/AD&D options provided for family.
CalPERS Retirement for “Classic Member”: (2% @ 60) – Employee pays employee portion between 7%-8%, “New Members” (2% @ 62) –Employee pays 7.75%. Deferred compensation 457B plan offered. The city matches employees’ 457B contributions up to 2% of base pay for new PEPRA CalPERS members.
The City participates in Social Security; provides two weeks of paid vacation, 12 Sick Leave days; 11 paid holidays and three floating holidays (112 hours), longevity pay and increased vacation days at 5 years.
