The Hult Center for the Performing Arts: Built by the people of Eugene, the Hult Center has quite an impressive history. Since its grand opening in 1982, the Hult Center has been charming audiences and popular performers alike with its stunning architectural and acoustic features. From the towering glass Lobby, the grand 2,448-seat Silva Concert Hall with its basketweave ceiling and the intimate 496-seat Soreng Theater with its intriguing asymmetrical design, the Hult Center is truly a great arts facility. The Hult Center is operated by the City of Eugene’s Cultural Services Division, as part of the City’s Library, Recreation and Cultural Services Department.

The Head Carpenter supports Silva and Soreng productions with participation in advance duties and productions. Regular maintenance work duties including assessment of equipment operations and maintenance records/logs. The position serves as the overall stage work coordinator for the events and is responsible for the work and coordination of each stage department and crew member. The Head Carpenter is responsible for direct communication and coordination with Front of House personnel, as well as representatives of management during the course of the load-in, show call, and load-out. The Head Carpenter will be responsible for monitoring all aspects of stagehand safety, performance, and behavior during the call and notifying a supervisor of any concerns. The Carpenter will also be assigned to other department duties if Hult crew assignments warrant. The Carpenter will need to be skilled in basic stagehand tasks for all departments and have the ability to perform duties in specialty fields of carpentry, audio, electrics and video.

Contributes to the theatre’s overall operations, safety, maintenance, and customer service. Adheres to safety rules and procedures in all aspects of operations. Maintains equipment storage areas and keeps stage areas clean. Reads work orders and follows oral instructions. Maintains effective communication and cooperative working relationships with crew members, road show staff, and management representatives. Actively support and respect diversity in the workplace. Performs related duties as assigned.


Head Carpenter: Monitors all aspects of stagehand safety, work performance, and personnel behavior during the call and notifies a supervisor of any concerns. Oversees the assembly, maintenance, repair, placement, handling, setting, striking, dismantling, and operation of scenery, backgrounds, platforms, orchestra enclosures, screens, drops, travelers, masking, risers, pianos, turntables, traps, dollies, lifts, stage floors, railings, theatrical scaffolding and all other structures comprising part of the stage or used on stage or in the immediate adjacent areas. Collaborates with show personnel (technical directors, road show crew and local crew) to fulfill the needs of each individual show, assists in pre-production planning, development and preparation of plans and plots, and leads or assists in advance, set modifications remodel, load in, rehearsal, and show functions. Oversees the use of house equipment, and installation of systems and equipment provided by the user group as it integrates their system with the house system. 

Performs related duties as assigned.

At the Hult Center, the Head Carpenter is a team builder and culture leader, who works with labor, management, and the artists to accomplish the artistic vision of the event.

  • The Head Carpenter should have excellent communication skills (verbal/written/electronic). They should be able to provide clear directions to teammates and concise feedback to management.
  • The Head Carpenter is the lead worker on any stage project and as such, should have a good working knowledge of all disciplines.
  • The Head Carpenter candidate should have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in a lead position at a professional performing arts center. Experience may also include completion of a terminal degree in theatrical arts, work as lead on a professional tour, or any other venue with similar demands to a professional venue or tour.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience

Three years of increasingly responsible related experience in stage trades, including one year of experience as a stage carpenter. Work experience in a professional performing arts venue comparable to the Hult Center required. 

Education
High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

Background

Must pass a background check.


Physical

Must pass a physical assessment and drug test.


License

Valid Oregon driver’s license or, the ability to obtain by date of hire; must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City’s standard. Oregon law requires that an out-of-state license holder must obtain a valid Oregon license (with appropriate endorsements) within 30 days of becoming domiciled in the state (ORS 803.355).


Certifications

Depending on assignment, may include:  

  • Possession of or ability to obtain within ## months and maintain a journey level stage electrician.   

  • CPR Certification or ability to obtain within ## months

The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities
Knowledge
  • General knowledge and experience in the operation and proper handling of all components of theatrical and entertainment related carpentry, tools, equipment, supplies, and systems, as appropriate to assignment. 
  • Knowledge of applicable safety hazards and precautions, safety practices and procedures. 
  • Knowledge of the care and maintenance of stage materials and equipment.
Ability
  • Ability to operate a variety of equipment related to theater operations.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in a clear and concise manner with diverse populations.   
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including extended evenings and weekends.   
  • Ability to work independently and function as a team member to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.   
  • Ability to perform a variety of functions that require sustained, strenuous physical exertion including activities such as moving, controlling, and depending on assignment requires lifting and controlling heavy items up to 100 pounds, stacking, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, climbing, and standing on concrete for extended periods during load ins, load outs, rehearsals, and performances. 
  • Ability to work at heights. 
  • Ability to work in dark conditions during performances and rehearsals, and to work in noisy environments for prolonged periods. 
  • Follow verbal and written instructions. 
  • Work well with co-workers.
Depending on assignment, may include:
  • Knowledge of operation, maintenance and proper handling of flyrail systems; theatrical electrical and dimming systems; property tools and systems; or sound equipment and systems.   
  • Skill to lead and coordinate the work of staff.   
  • Ability to coordinate, lead, and advise the work of theater employees.   
  • Ability to use sound independent judgment and diplomacy.   
  • Ability to coach, teach, and advise others, be a creative problem solver, and function as a general and technical resource person. 
Working Conditions
Stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time. Regularly lift, control, or move objects up to 65 pounds, depending on assignment, may require lifting and controlling up 100 pounds. Required to handle or work around potentially hazardous substances. Majority of work occurs in theatre environment with significant amount of varied equipment. May walk and work at height above the theatre stage.

What to Expect from our Selection Process

In addition, background investigations and records checks may be required. Some positions also require applicants to have a psychological evaluation and/or physical examination and a drug test prior to employment.
