The City of Eustis is seeking a trustworthy, responsible individual who will perform skilled maintenance and construction work through journeymen knowledge in the operation of heavy equipment and machinery in the Water Department. This position requires experienced knowledge of various public services construction, repair and maintenance activities. Routine work is performed with independence and more difficult work is performed under supervision.
Examples of Machines, Tools and Equipment Used:
Hand tools, machines and equipment as used by Maintenance Worker I and II, such as shovels, rakes, hammers, chain saws, lawn mowers, edgers, sprayers, air compressors, stump grinders, chippers; in addition, operates, maintains and repairs backhoes, bulldozers, graders, jack hammer, welder, pneumatic mole, tapping machine and paving machines, etc.
Supervision Received:
Foreman, Supervisor
Knowledge of materials, tools and supplies in construction, maintenance and repair work; knowledge of the operational characteristics of assigned equipment, tools and materials; knowledge of safe driving techniques and related occupational hazards.
Ability to carry out assignments with minimum instructions; ability to drive and operate assigned equipment; ability to read; ability to adhere to prescribed routines and practices; ability to detect improper functioning of mechanical systems and make minor adjustments; ability to work on-call, if required, including nights, weekends and holidays; ability to remain at a city work shelter, before, during and after a hurricane or other storm or disaster, if asked.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or recognized equivalent; supplemented by two (2) years experience in water distribution, labor or maintenance work, and two (2) years responsible experience in the operation of heavy equipment. Valid Florida Class B Commercial License with an acceptable driving record is required. Other related experience may be considered.
Working Hours:
Generally, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; however, due to the nature of the position, some on call and overtime work may be required.Physical Demands:
This is heavy physical work most of the working time. Requires frequent walking; frequent standing, climbing, stooping, reaching, bending; lifting 50 pounds, carrying/pushing/pulling 50 pounds; good finger/hand dexterity and hand/eye coordination; good eyesight; hearing and speech or vocal communication (for safety); working in adverse environmental conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.) for long periods of time; regular driving and operation of assigned equipment.
Salary Information:

- Performs lead capacity tasks to assist in the training of new employees and supervision of maintenance and utility workers;
- Operates complex and heavy mechanical equipment and checks for improper functioning of mechanical systems;
- Performs maintenance, makes moderately complex repairs and assists in complex repairs of equipment and vehicles;
- Performs duties of Maintenance Worker II such as maintenance, repairs and construction of Public Works, Storm Water, Wastewater, Water, Building, Parks and Recreation projects;
- Assists in the preparation for and aftermath of a major emergency such as a hurricane or other storm or disaster;
- Works on-call, as needed, during emergency situations such as hurricanes, severe weather, etc.;
- Performs other related duties as required.
