The City of Eustis is seeking a trustworthy, responsible individual who, under general supervision, performs outdoor work involving the reading and recording of city water meters. Although the employee works independently and is often physically removed from supervision, duties are performed within the framework of pre-established policies and procedures.
Examples of Machines, Tools and Equipment Used: City vehicle; general office and computer equipment; metal detector; bee poles; flashlight; various hand tools, including shovels, wrenches, screwdrivers, etc.

Ability to work well with others and assist the public cooperatively and courteously; ability to read and write English; ability to perform routine mathematics calculations accurately and quickly; ability to carry out assignments with minimum instructions; ability to maintain accurate records; ability to drive a vehicle; ability to work on-call during emergency situations including nights, weekends and holidays; ability to remain at a city work shelter, before, during and after a hurricane or other storm or disaster, if asked.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma, supplemented by a demonstrated ability to read and write English. Valid Florida Driver's License with an acceptable driving record is required.
Working Hours:
Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. However, due to the nature of the position, must be available to be on-call during emergency situations including nights, weekends, and holidays.Physical Demands:
This is continuous light work and occasional heavy work. Requires frequent driving, walking and standing for long periods of time; frequent stooping, bending and reaching; regular lifting of 15 to 50 pounds; good finger/hand dexterity and hand/eye coordination; good eyesight; working in adverse environmental conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.) for long periods of time.
Salary Information:
$16.6256 to $22.5143 per hour ($34,581.29 - $49,011.00 per year); EXCELLENT benefits (Note: See Benefits Tab for more information). Applicants should expect a starting salary of $16.6256 per hour. Supervision Received: Field Customer Service Supervisor
- Drives routes in order to collect RF meter readings according to department schedule;
- Manually read any meters that were unable to be read via RF;
- Operates handheld meter reading device and computer equipment manually inputting information if needed;
- Inspects meters and writes work orders on meters needing repair or replacement;
- Repairs and replaces broken or missing electronic meter heads;
- Reports any irregularities noted on route;
- Turns meters on and off, as required;
- Makes re-inspections of meters to verify readings and makes physical inspections of customer complaints, as needed;
- Writes up and delivers tags for high consumption;
- Performs various computer related functions including the loading of new sections, loading and unloading of routes in Edmunds, printing meter readings, pre-billing audits and Edmunds reports;
- Answers questions and provides information and assistance to the public, as needed;
- Inspects irrigation systems to advise customer of water consumption;
- Maintains and clears meter boxes of bugs, dirt and vegetation, as needed;
- Fuels and maintains a stocked city vehicle;
- Completes scheduled work orders in Utility Software including but not limited to:
- Meter Locates (flagging or marking);
- Meter Pollings;
- On/Off for new connections, final reads and vacation status;
- Quality Control Checks;
- Collects on past-due accounts via phone, as needed;
- Works on-call schedule as required;
- Works on-call, as needed, during emergency situations such as hurricanes, severe weather, etc.;
- Must learn the other duties which include cut-on and cut-off procedures as well as all other duties before being able to move to Field Customer Service Representative (Minimum must have one year or proficiency has been achieved beyond the one year).
Other Job Functions:
- Assists the Water Customer Service Division with various clerical duties during inclement weather and upon completion of field work;
- Assists the other department staff, as needed;
- Performs various tasks including and post office errands for the department, if necessary;
- Assists in the preparation for and aftermath of a major emergency such as a hurricane or other storm or disaster, as needed;
- Performs other related duties as needed.
