NATURE OF WORK: The Day Camp Aide, Counselor and Day Camp Director are responsible for directing a wide variety of recreation activities for the 10-week summer day camp program for up to 40 children, ages 5-11.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Day Camp Aide:

- Ability to listen to, read, understand, and communicate the English language both orally and in writing so others can understand, such as correspondence, report writing, and emails.

- Protects health and safety (emotional and physical) of all campers.
- Assists in providing experiences that promote individual and group growth.
- Assists with planning, organizing, and directing a wide variety of recreation programs, field trips, and special events.
- Supports activities such as crafts, science projects, games, and reading.
- Collaborates with Director and camp staff to create an effective discipline plan for campers. Monitors camper behavior daily.
- Supervises the issuance, use, care and maintenance of recreation supplies, and equipment.
- Follows assigned work schedule and camp schedule.
- Supervises participants on all bus trips, at the swimming pool, and during special events.
- Actively participates in camp activities, including regular interaction with staff and campers.
- Reviews and understands camp policies and procedures.
- Reports to the Recreation Supervisor-Programs and Seniors as needed regarding programs, activities, special events, supplies, or any equipment with problems or in need of repair.
- As a member of the City of Evans team, employees are privileged to serve each other and the community; therefore, will be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.
Day Camp Counselor:
- Assists with planning, organizing, and directing a wide variety of recreation programs, field trips, and special events, such as crafts, science projects, games, and reading.
- Collaborates and communicates with parents via app, phone calls, and in-person as needed in absence of the Day Camp Director.
- Collaborates with the Director to create an effective discipline plan for campers. Monitors camper behavior daily.
- Completes end of shift report each day.
- Supervises the issuance, use, care and maintenance of recreation supplies, and equipment.
- Reports concerns regarding programs, activities, special events, supplies or equipment problems to Recreation Supervisor-Programs and Seniors. Ability to instruct a wide variety of recreational, educational, and cultural activities for youth.
- Knowledge of rules and regulations for various sports and athletic activities.
- Ability to work well with small children aged 5 to 11 and their parents or guardians.
Day Camp Director:
In addition to previous essential functions:
- Supervises Day Camp Aides ,Day Camp Counselors, , and volunteers. Plans and facilitates staff meetings. Guides staff to comply with state licensing requirements.
- Creates supervision plans for counselors to provide effective coverage of campers on and off site.
- Prepares, plans, leads, guides, and delegates leadership responsibilities for all camp programming.
- Collaborates with Recreation Supervisor to lead and facilitate pre-camp parent and guardian meeting.
- Assists in staff training.
- Assists with planning, organizing, scheduling and directing a wide variety of, field trips, and special events.
- Creates effective discipline plan for camp, monitors camper behavior, and supports staff and campers through the day.
- Supervises the issuance, use, care and maintenance of recreation supplies and equipment.
- Supervise, guide, and assist campers and staff during crafts, art projects, games, and other activities.
- Supervises staff, volunteers, and participants on all field trips, including at swimming pools, and during special events.
- Understanding of the development needs of youth. Ability to observe camp behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
- Skill in appropriately supervising and directing school-aged children in an unstructured setting.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSURE
Day Camp Aide:
Required:
- Must be 16 years of age or older.
- Ability to accept supervision and guidance
- Must possess integrity, adaptability, enthusiasm, patience, thoughtfulness and self-control.
- Must set a good example for campers and others including cleanliness, personal responsibility, punctuality and sportsmanship. Positive ”can do” attitude.
- Must demonstrate ability to work with children, and must meet the following qualifications:
- Complete the Department-approved course in injury prevention; and
- Complete the Department-approved course in playground safety for School-Aged Child Care Centers.
- Must have current CPR/First Aid/Universal Precautions Certification, and Medication Administration Training prior to start date.
Preferred:
- Previous experience working with children, ideally in a camp setting.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Experience in public/municipal sector.
Day Camp Counselor:
Required:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Valid Colorado Driver’s License or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Recreation/Leisure Services, Education, or related field and/or three years’ experience working with children.

Must meet the following qualifications:
- Complete the Department-approved course in injury prevention.
- Complete the Department-approved course in playground safety for School-Aged Child Care Centers. This requirement does not apply to day camps that do not regularly use a playground.
- Must have at least three (3) months (460 hours) of full-time or equivalent part-time satisfactory and verifiable experience with school-age children.
- Must complete state required training prior to camp beginning.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Day Camp Director:
In addition to previous requirements:
Required:
- Must be 21 years of age or older.

Must have verifiable education or training in work with school-age children in such areas as recreation, education, scouting or 4-H; the Day Camp Director must have completed at least one of the following qualifications:
- A four (4) year college degree with a major such as recreation, outdoor education, education with a specialty in art, elementary or early childhood education, or a subject in the human service field; or
- Two years of college training and six (6) months (910 hours) of satisfactory and verifiable full-time or equivalent part-time, paid or volunteer experience, since attaining the age of eighteen (18), in the care and supervision of four (4) or more children; or
- Three years (5460 hours) of satisfactory and verifiable full-time or equivalent part-time, paid or volunteer experience and one of the following qualifications: Complete six semester hours, or nine quarter hours in course work from a regionally accredited college or university; or
- 40 clock hours of training in course work applicable to school-age children and the department-approved courses in injury prevention, and playground safety for School-Aged Childcare Centers within the first nine months of employment.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, sit, walk, squat, talk, hear and see. The employee is required to perform lifting 25 pounds.
Employee is required to work indoors, and occasionally outdoors in all weather conditions, and may be exposed to extreme heat, extreme cold, loud noise, toxic materials, and vibration.
