What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bus Driver, Part-Time position at City of Evanston?
- Drive the bus or van to safely transport participants on designated routes as specified by the bus coordinator and/or center manager.
- Follow all traffic laws and regulations, ensuring the safety of all passengers and adhering to speed limits and road signs.
- Accurately complete the vehicle log for each trip, documenting incidents, mileage, and safety checks, and submitting logs as required.
- Perform minor cleaning of the vehicle, including sweeping and tidying up after each trip, to keep the vehicle clean and ready for the next group of passengers.
- Park the bus or van in a designated location at the end of each trip, ensuring it is properly secured and locked.
- Conduct interior and exterior safety checks of the vehicle before and after each trip
- Check the fuel and fluids before departure to ensure the vehicle is fully prepared for the trip.
- Refuel the vehicle when necessary and report any issues with fuel levels or the vehicle's performance.
- Perform annual safety lane inspections and ensure the vehicle is washed and properly maintained according to guidelines.
- Report any damage to the vehicle to the bus coordinator and/or center manager
- Fill out and submit repair orders to the Fleet Services office for any maintenance needs or mechanical issues.
- Maintain a safe and secure environment inside the vehicle, assisting in monitoring passenger behavior and ensuring their safety during the trip.
- Help with the safe loading and unloading of passengers as needed, ensuring all passengers are safely onboard and ready to depart.
- Work with program staff to ensure that all passengers have their seatbelts securely fastened before departure.
- Perform any other duties as assigned
- Must possess a High School Diploma or GED.
- Must possess a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with passenger and air brake endorsements.
- Must possess two (1) or more years of professional driving experience

Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions such as extreme cold, high winds, rain, snow, sleet, high temperatures and humidity; the ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 20 pounds without mechanical assistance; to sit for long periods of time, bend, and work outdoors with limited lighting; to work with chemicals, vehicles or equipment fumes and gasses.
SUPERVISION:
Work is performed under the general direction/supervision of the Community and Arts Division Manager in cooperation with the Bus Coordinator. Assignments may vary from season to season and day to day. Assignments can be either verbal or written, with the employee determining proper procedure and work methods and is responsible for completing the work according to City work rules and safety regulations. Work is reviewed through ongoing observation, written and verbal communication, meetings and feedback from supervisors and other department employees. Guidance is provided through rules and regulations, policies and procedures, Unified Work Rules, Union Contract, Personnel Rules and OSHA. Work is evaluated at least annually for the safe and skilled operation of equipment, quality of tasks, adherence to work rules, and performance in accordance with classification standard.
PUBLIC CONTACT:
The employee has regular contact with the general public when working his/her normal shift. They may be asked to field questions and respond to concerns. The employee has contact with other City employees to relay factual and specific information regarding work assignments.
