DUTIES: Oversees the veterinary care for the zoo’s diverse animal collection. Creates and administers preventative veterinary medicine programs, including quarantine protocols, vaccinations, nutrition, annual physical exams, postmortem examinations, treatment for sick animals, etc. Advises on nutrition, husbandry, animal welfare, pest control and zoonotic disease prevention. Maintains medical records and all relevant regulatory compliance. Oversees purchasing for the hospital including supplies, equipment and maintains veterinary medical budget. Supports conservation initiatives and is part of the zoo’s management team. Supervises veterinary support staff. Performs duties as assigned and reports to the zoo director. On call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
QUALIFICATIONS: Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from an accredited university. At least one year of working experience within a zoological institution. Postgraduate training in zoological medicine, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid Indiana State Veterinary License by time of appointment, valid driver’s license and must obtain valid DEA license. Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment, be able to meet the physical demands of this position and be able to work in all weather conditions.
