What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fire Recruit position at City of Fairborn?
Under the general supervision of the Battalion Chief, performs work relating to the response to fire, medical emergency, or public assistance requests as necessary to protect life and property. Can also expect to participate in fire prevention activities and training activities of all related fields. Performs station and vehicle maintenance and other duties as required. Work in this position normally does not involve direct supervision of subordinates. May assist as a Command aid during the shift and / or on incidents. Performs related work as required.After fire or training activities, maintain equipment to return it to readiness for further calls.
Assists in maintaining fire apparatus and associated equipment, fire station, and grounds.
Drives fire department vehicles in non-incident operations once properly trained and with approval.
Assists in making residential, commercial and industrial inspections to discover and eliminate potential fire hazards.
Assists in education of the public in fire prevention and being prepared for fire suppression tactics.
Participates in continuing training and instruction programs by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes.
Assists in hydrant inspections, building inspections, and preplans.
May operate departmental radio communications equipment.
May be permitted to attend approved classes and trainings. On days where there are no classes or scheduled training, the recruit will report as directed to assist with the daily functions of the department.
Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of Fire Department property.
Cleans and washes walls and floors, makes minor repairs, paints and otherwise maintains quarters.
Performs general administrative duties and tasks at the direction of senior members.High School diploma or equivalent required. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Ohio driver's license. Must be enrolled in Paramedic program and enrolled in Firefighter I or II course – or recently completed these courses. Must be able to complete all hiring requirements and probationary period.Knowledge of elementary physics and mechanics.
Ability to learn technical firefighting principles and techniques and principles of hydraulics as applied to fire suppression.
Ability to learn firefighting, driver/operator, public relations, EMT and paramedic training.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with other employees and the public.
Ability to keep simple records and prepare reports.
Mechanical aptitude.
Physical endurance and agility.
