The City of Fairfax is seeking a highly skilled Med-Heavy Fleet Technician II to join our Fleet Services team. This position is responsible for performing mechanical repairs, diagnostics, maintenance, fabrication, and new equipment setup for a diverse fleet, including medium and heavy-duty vehicles, emergency response vehicles, special operations equipment, construction equipment, and public works vehicles.
As a Med-Heavy Fleet Technician II, you will be responsible for diagnosing and repairing a variety of vehicles and equipment, including police vehicles, refuse collection trucks, aerial bucket trucks, leaf trucks, snow equipment, sewer equipment, backhoes, loaders, hybrid vehicles, and more. This role requires the ability to work independently, use diagnostic tools, and respond to emergency breakdowns as part of an on-call rotation.
Examples Of Duties
Perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a variety of fleet vehicles and equipment.
Repair transmissions, differentials, hydraulic pumps, brake systems, electrical components, and fuel systems.
Operate diagnostic tools and software to troubleshoot mechanical and electronic issues.
Perform fabrication and welding tasks as needed for vehicle modifications and repairs.
Mount and maintain snow removal equipment, hydraulic attachments, traffic advisory systems, backup cameras, and specialized refuse equipment.
Conduct Virginia State vehicle inspections for city-owned vehicles.
Respond to on-call emergency repairs and breakdowns.
Assist in developing equipment specifications for new vehicles.
Maintain a clean and organized work environment in compliance with OSHA regulations.
This position is designated as Essential. As an essential employee, you will be expected to report to work during inclement weather occurrences or other emergencies. This position is vital in maintaining continuity and efficiency of operations.

Qualifications
High school diploma or GED supplemented by formal training in automotive and diesel mechanics.
Four years of experience in fleet maintenance, including medium and heavy-duty vehicle repairs.
Strong knowledge of diesel/gasoline engines, hydraulic systems, pneumatic components, and electronic diagnostics.
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
Skilled in operating various power tools, welding equipment, and heavy-duty diagnostic instruments.
Special Certifications and Licenses: (Required or to be obtained within 12 months)
Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with N, P, and air brake endorsements (or ability to obtain within six months).
Virginia State Vehicle Inspector Certification.
ASE Certifications:
- Heavy-duty truck brakes
- Air Conditioning 609 Certification
- Two additional ASE truck certifications (assigned by the Fleet Services Superintendent)
- ASE xEV Level 1 Certification (for hybrid and electric vehicles)
Additional Desirable Qualification:
Experience with municipal fleet maintenance.
Welding and fabrication skills.
Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-demand environment.
Supplemental Information
Selected candidates with an active CDL will receive a $2,000 bonus upon hire. (Paid per pay period, 26 pay periods per year).
Selected candidates with an active CDL learner’s permit will receive a $1,000 bonus upon hire. (Paid per pay period, 26 pay periods per year).
Work Hours: Monday to Friday from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm, with occasional overtime and rotating on-call for afterhours needs.
