What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Works Maintenance Worker I/Driver-Stormwater Utility position at City of Fairfax?
This position is responsible for working in the operation of a variety of trucks for construction and maintenance purposes.
Work involves the operation and care of truck’s snow plowing, leaf collecting, water flushing, and general hauling or may involve the operation of a bucket truck to remove tree limbs and for other purposes. Work also may involve a variety of semiskilled and general laboring work. Occasionally operates brush and refine trucks. Work is performed under the general supervision of a crew leader and is reviewed through observation and daily reports.
Operates vehicles and equipment; hauls construction materials to and from job sites; loads and unloads materials.
Inspects truck and equipment to ensure proper operation and servicing; reports safety violations and repair needs to superior; performs routine maintenance and servicing of assigned vehicle.
Performs a variety of semi-skilled and general labor tasks related to the work of the crew to which assigned during periods and at intervals when not actually engaged in truck driving or equipment operation.
Operates backhoe, loader, tamper, or other types of equipment when required.
Maintains safety regulations and work standards in the operation of vehicles and equipment.
Performs snow and ice removal duties.
Perform duties of Utility Worker III when needed, to include but not limit to laying pipe, building storm structure, pouring and finishing concrete curb and gutter, sidewalk, and driveway aprons, removing and replacing asphalt, landscaping, using a jackhammer.
Use various mechanized equipment such as chainsaws, tampers, weed eaters, hand tools, shovels, picks, axes, and digging bars.
May be required to respond to emergencies outside the normal workday.
Performs related work as assigned.

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.
Requires one year experience driving heavy trucks or closely related experience.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of assigned vehicles.
Considerable knowledge of traffic laws and regulations involved in vehicle operation.
Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of assigned work.
Ability to read maps.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to follow city safety regulations.
Skill in driving assigned vehicles.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
Possession of a valid class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a good driving record.
Selected candidates with an active CDL will receive a $2,000 bonus upon hire. (Paid per pay period, 26 pay periods per year).
Selected candidates with an active CDL learner’s permit will receive a $1,000 bonus upon hire. (Paid per pay period, 26 pay periods per year).
Salary : $43,902 - $70,119
