What are the responsibilities and job description for the Temporary Administrative Assistant - Public Works position at City of Fairfax?

Performs a variety of clerical and customer service duties in support of the Department of Public Works Administration and Engineering Division. Provides assistance and information in response to public inquiries either over the phone, email or in person. Directs queries to relevant entities or responds directly to general inquiries as appropriate.    Provides general office support.

Greets callers and in-person visitors, assesses the caller’s or visitor’s needs, and answers inquiries within the context of the department’s policies and procedures; initiates correspondence responding to inquiries or requests.


Opens, processes, and distributes department mail and correspondence, appropriately prioritizing items needing attention.


Prepares outgoing postal correspondence including construction project notifications, road closure notifications, right-of-way acquisition requests, and other community outreach materials.


Maintains department supply inventory; orders various equipment and supplies as needed.


Receives and provides general information when requested; responds to inquiries requiring the use of initiative, judgment, and interpretation of rules, regulations, and procedures.


Plans, initiates, and completes a variety of administrative assignments.


Arrange and schedule appointments, travel, itineraries, meetings, and related activities.


Provides general office support where needed.


Sends fee invoices, collects payment, and maintains related records.

Graduation from High School or GED and customer service experience.


Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


Experience working with computers and ability and willingness to learn applicable computer software packages. 


Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word.

Salary : $18 - $22
