Telecommunicator is responsible for simultaneously operating a multi-channel radio console and a multi-line telephone, while maintaining computer-aided dispatch systems and other computer systems. Responsible for receiving, coordinating and disseminating critical information from various sources for multiple jurisdictions and maintaining radio contact with mobile/field units to monitor response, progress and any needed support. This position works in the Communications Center which is responsible for answering 9-1-1 calls in a 24/7 operation. Performs other duties as required.

- Use a computer-aided dispatch system, receive emergency calls from the public requesting police, fire, medical or other emergency services. Determine the nature and location of the emergency; determine priorities, and dispatch police, fire, ambulance or other emergency units as necessary and in accordance with established procedures. Receive and process 911 emergency calls, maintain contact with all units on assignment, maintain status and location of police and fire units.
- Answer non-emergency calls for assistance. Enter, update and retrieve information from a variety of computer systems. Maintain accurate, up-to-date files and logs.
- Receive requests for information regarding vehicle registration, driving records and warrants, and provides pertinent data. Monitor several complex public safety radio frequencies. Operate a variety of communications equipment, including radio consoles, telephones and computer systems.
- Relates effectively to those contacted in the course of work. Prepare reports as required. Use good judgment in making decisions, in emergency and routine situations. Perform other duties as required.
- Utilize multiple online systems to augment and enhance performance.
- Public safety dispatchers work shift assignments including weekends and holidays in a 24/7 operation.
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Business English, spelling, grammar, and punctuation required to compose and proofread written documents (e.g. memoranda, letters, reports, studies, manual, training material, etc.) of moderate to complex difficulty on various subjects.
- Streets, emergency services, town government and resources of participating municipalities
- Basic computer use
Skill in:
- Communicating clearly, concisely and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- The operation of a multi-channel radio with multiple frequencies, distinguishing and recognizing a variety of radio voice transmissions.
- The use of multiple computer/keyboard devices to retrieve and/or enter information.
Additional Requirements:
- Must obtain all required State of Connecticut and Fairfield County Regional Dispatch Center certifications within six months of hire and maintain certification throughout the course of this assignment with the Department.
- Holidays, weekends, irregular hours and shift work are required with possible extension of shift hours, at times with short notice.
- Limited travel in all (adverse) weather conditions is necessary.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Requires a high school diploma or GED.
- Must successfully complete the examination process.
- Must successfully complete all required certification training
- Must be able to maintain all required certifications
Ability to:
- Speak clearly and distinctly at all times and communicate information in a concise and accurate manner.

- Effectively interpret a variety of maps and dispatch information to field personnel.
- Accurately interpret and follow Department rules and guidelines, (e.g. Standard Operating Procedures, directives, memos).

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:
- 24 hour/7 day emergency dispatcher center operation setting.
- Work is performed in a confined area with limited mobility.
- Required to sit for extended periods of time with limited or no breaks.
- Be able to read computer monitors and written documents

All positions (police dispatcher, fire dispatcher, call taker) are interchangeable and telecommunicators are required to be proficient at each. Call taking duties will be absorbed by the Police and Fire Dispatchers in the event call volume exceeds the capability of the assigned call-takers or if a call-taker is not assigned or available.
