The Fairfield Civil Service Commission is conducting an open competitive exam to establish an Eligibility List for the position of entry-level Zoning Inspector/Clerk for The City of Fairfield. The exam will be conducted on Wednesday, February 26, 2025 at 6:00 pm at the Fairfield Community Arts Center, located at 411 Wessel Drive, Fairfield, OH 45014.
Responsibilities for Zoning Inspector/Clerk include: developing pro-active inspection work plans and investigating citizen complaints regarding zoning and property maintenance issues throughout the City of Fairfield. Physically inspecting property; taking measurements, photographs and written notes to document findings. Participation in corrective legal action, hearings or trials; assist in obtaining and presenting exhibits/evidence for the Court. Write and present reports; prepare correspondence to citizens; maintain files; and work with residents and/or property owners to resolve issues and complaints.
Applicants must be: minimum 18 years of age; effective oral and written communication skills and experience; basic computer literacy with word processing and spreadsheet skills; high school diploma or GED; successful completion of Civil Service examination; knowledge of contemporary office practices; mathematics and computational skills; working knowledge and ability to interpret and enforce the City’s Zoning and Property Maintenance Code and other codes; valid driver’s license.
Scope of the exam will be multiple choice questions covering basic knowledge and knowledge of skills necessary to perform the duties of the position. A passing grade of 70% must be achieved to be included on the Eligibility List. In the event of tied scores, priority on the Eligibility List is determined by the date and time your application is received.

Under general supervision, investigates citizen complaints, commercial and residential code violations and follows up to resolve same.
- Investigates citizen complaints regarding zoning and property maintenance issues by physically inspecting the premises, taking measurements, photographs and written notes to document findings. Conducts follow-up visits as necessary.
- Participates in corrective legal action where appropriate, gathering evidence, consulting with City Prosecutor and Law Director and participating at hearings or trials. Assists in obtaining, examining, preparing and presenting exhibits or other evidence for the Court. Provides testimony as required.
- Observes, measure and report on such items as parking facilities, dumpster locations, fencing, building setbacks, trash, litter, weed control and lot sizes. Drives to sites of complaints.
- Conducts research as necessary. Writes and present reports. Prepares letters and correspondence to citizens. Prepares court summons. Maintains files. Provides competent service, in-person or through telephone or computer messaging, to the internal and external customer, responding to questions, providing information and issuing reports. Works to resolve issues and complaints.
- Performs all duties in a safe manner and per applicable Federal, State and local rules and regulations.
Salary : $56,701 - $60,258
