Description
Under the general supervision of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Manager, this employee performs a variety of tasks and duties associated with the safe and effective operation of the City's wastewater treatment plant. These tasks and duties include, but are not limited to, regular (daily) inspections of treatment plant equipment for safe and effective operation, recording treatment data based on equipment inspections and monitoring, performing required laboratory tests for wastewater treatment monitoring, performing routine equipment maintenance (lubrication, adjusting equipment, etc.), collecting wastewater samples for state reporting requirements, preparing and submitting required laboratory results to appropriate state and federal agencies, assisting treatment plant staff as needed (i.e., changing motors), calibrating and adjusting laboratory equipment and maintaining treatment plant building and grounds. This job is considered safety sensitive and is subject to a background check and random drug screening.
Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION : Treatment Plant Operations. Employee operates the City wastewater treatment plant in accordance with all applicable City, state and federal regulations and requirements.
1. Performs treatment plant inspections, equipment monitoring and inspection, laboratory testing, equipment maintenance (lubrication, adjustments, etc.) treatment process monitoring, recording, and reporting treatment processing data and other operational components.
2. Submits laboratory test results to appropriate City, state, and federal agencies; re-calibrates and adjusts laboratory equipment as needed.
3. Assists treatment plant staff as needed.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTION :
Performs other job-related duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Possess a high school diploma or GED.
2. Minimum of five (5) to ten (10) years of experience in wastewater treatment plant operations and processes.
3. Possess a Grade IV Wastewater certification from the State of Alabama or be able to obtain this certification. At least twenty-four (24) months of work experience at the wastewater treatment plant is required before applying for certification, or thirty-six (36) months of combined working experience in a Grade III or IV treatment plant. Credit for a maximum of twelve (12) months of treatment experience may be allowed by ADEM for the completion of, or attendance at, ADEM-approved training programs, classes, or seminars.
4. Ability to travel to attend professional development workshops and training programs.
5. Ability to work non-standard hours and overtime when required.
6. Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and an initial drug screen.

Physical Demands
The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 50 lbs., crouching, or crawling in restricted areas.

The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., working at great heights under extreme weather conditions, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.
