Description
Under the supervision of the Sanitation Supervisor, the employee performs manual work functions associated with the City's sanitation programs, including collection and disposal of solid waste and recycling materials from residential and commercial establishments, and sorting / baling of recyclable materials at the recycle facility. The employee may drive Department vehicles as a substitute driver. The employee may assist with preparations and setting barricades for City special events. Work involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action. This job is considered safety-sensitive and is subject to a pre-employment background check and random drug screenings.
Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION : Refuse and Recycle Collection Operations. Employee performs manual work functions and operates equipment associated with the collection, transport, and disposal of refuse and recycled materials.
- Performs manual lifting; loading trash carts, recycle bins, and heavy materials.
- Transports, loads, and unloads various materials and equipment used in daily operations and projects.
- Rides routes with drivers to facilitate efficient pickup of materials.
- Ensures materials are securely placed on trucks to prevent shifting / falling.
- Cuts tree limbs and picks up debris outside of trash containers.
- Rakes, sweeps, shovels, and cleans ground around trash disposal areas.
- Assists drivers of garbage trucks and recycling trucks by directing traffic.
- Monitors traffic conditions surrounding trucks / equipment to identify obstructions, pedestrians, or unsafe traffic conditions.
- Uses precautionary safety equipment and gear; monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
- Recognizes contaminated or hazardous materials in the waste stream and reports findings to supervisor.
- Delivers new or replacement recycle bins to customers.
- Transports recycle materials to receiving station in Pensacola, FL.
- Performs driving functions safely and efficiently in various weather conditions.
- Serves as a backup driver of garbage or recycling trucks as assigned and if properly licensed.
- Performs daily vehicle inspections and completes required checklists to ensure safe vehicle operation; identifies and reports mechanical or operational problems.
- Operates pickup truck to collect and transport trash and recyclable material from inaccessible areas; plans daily routes for maximum efficiency.
- Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing / cleaning equipment, and cleaning shed and work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
- Prepares or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, maintenance reports, ordinance violation sheets, and other documents.

Physical Demands
The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 50 lbs., crouching, or crawling in restricted areas.
Work Environment
The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., working at great heights under extreme weather conditions, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.
