The Lifeguard/Water Exercise Instructor is responsible for maintaining a safe, pleasant swimming environment; providing the necessary supervision to prevent accidents both in the water and on the pool deck area; performing rescues and responding with emergency care for the accident victim.  Additionally, the Lifeguard/Water Exercise Instructor will create and maintain a cheerful, professional, and helpful environment while serving the community with water exercise programs.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - LIFEGUARDING
  • The first and foremost responsibility at all times is to protect life.
  • Report to work 15 minutes prior to scheduled time.
  • Be ready, in full uniform, with proper equipment and at your station when patrons arrive.
  • Be sure the pool area is clean and safe.
  • Do not allow patrons in the pool if there are any problems.
  • Put out proper equipment (lane lines, lifeline, etc.)
  • Report any missing or broken equipment to the supervisors.
  • Have your rescue tube strapped on, when lifeguarding, anytime there are patrons in the pool area (including the pool deck).
  • Stay at assigned post/area, alert and ready to act at all times.
  • Refrain from unnecessary talking with the public.
  • Use a loud, yet courteous voice, and your whistle to provide simple and concise directions to maintain order in the pool and on the deck at all times.
  • Know the emergency procedures and respond promptly to any emergency situation.
  • Complete rescue reports and give to Aquatics Supervisor within 24 hours.
  • Never leave the pool area unattended if there are patrons in the pool, on deck, or if the doors are unlocked.
  • Never leave the pool areas unlocked if there is not a lifeguard on duty.
  • Work a variety of hours between 5:30 am and 11:00 pm.
  • Fulfill any other duties as directed by Supervisors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – WATER EXERCISE INSTRUCTOR
  • Demonstrate genuine enthusiasm and care.
  • Provide a variety of workouts for the participants.  New exercises must be introduced monthly.
  • Compliment, encourage, and challenge participants.
  • Watch for over-excursion.
  • Only use the equipment, which is provided by the Faribault Community Center.
  • Do not give medical advice.
  • Educate the participants on the positive and negative impacts of each exercise and the proper use of fitness equipment.
  • Act and look professional.  Instructors must wear a one-piece swimsuit.  
  • Instructors’ workout must include a warm-up, stretching, aerobic set, toning, cool-down, and stretch.
  • Put all fitness equipment neatly away.
  • Close and clean the pool area if your class is the last event in the pool for the day.  
  • You must attend 2 hours of in-service training each month. (last Sunday.) 
  • Instruct either on deck or in the water close to the pool edge.  
  • Fulfill any other duties as assigned by your Supervisors.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as running errands, picking up supplies needed for activities, helping set up for classes, events, etc.Education:  American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and first aid; American Red Cross CPR for the professional rescuer; basic knowledge and fundamental understanding of water exercise.
 
Experience:  Thorough knowledge and application of swimming and water safety skills; understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies and procedures; leadership and public relations skills; communication skills.
 
Licenses or Certifications:
American Red Cross Lifeguarding and First Aid
American Red Cross CPR for the professional RescuerSUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor

 PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit and talk or hear use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. 

 WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. 

 While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in indoor and outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. 

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, and moderately loud when in the program setting. 

 PRE-EMPLOYMENT PROCESS

The City of Faribault conducts a thorough pre-employment process for incumbents joining the organization.  This process may include professional reference checks, employment verification, assessment testing, criminal history check, and driver’s check (must have valid Driver’s License and excellent driving record).  All final candidates must successfully complete and pass the City’s evaluation of all pre-employment results before their first day of employment.
