Essential Job Duties
Safety/Security Sensitive Designation:This is a safety/security sensitive position for purposes of the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment.
- Provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees (especially members of their own team), and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive.
- Perform supervisory responsibilities which may include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the City's policies and applicable laws.
- Oversee all horticultural tasks including garden design, installation, maintenance, planning and ordering supplies, as well as greenhouse operations.
- Maintain Greenhouse – ordering, plant propagation, crop rotation, transplanting, watering and pest control.
- Provide garden and landscape design and planning. Apply thorough knowledge of all plant materials, environments, soils and soil amendments, climate and microclimates.
- Perform garden and landscape installation including plant selection and layout, hauling materials, planting, mulching and watering.
- Perform maintenance such as pest control, pruning, weeding, mulching, edging and watering. Apply thorough knowledge of pest and plant identification. Assist with irrigations systems design, maintenance and light repairs.
- Develop and provide estimates for annual budget. Research costs, resources, products and suppliers
- Cooperate with the Volunteer Coordinator to plan, coordinate, schedule, work with and train volunteers for horticulture projects.
- Develop, oversee and participate in horticultural related community programs including community gardens.
- Perform light maintenance on equipment used in the field.
- Develop and deliver presentations and documents.
- Position requires occasional after-hours or weekend work in support of greenhouse operations.

Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma and ten years of horticulture related experience.Prefer Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) in Horticulture or related field from a college or university and two years of related experience.Previous supervisory experience is preferred.
- Must possess a valid Driver's License.
- Must successfully pass criminal background check, including but not limited to convictions, guilty pleas, or no contest pleas to violent offenses, theft offenses, offenses against children, and any offense that would qualify to prevent a person from obtaining an Arkansas teaching certificate (A.C.A. 6-17-410).
- Arkansas State Pesticide Applicator's License preferred.
- Effectively communicate with others orally and in writing.
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as area, circumference, volume, percentages, fractions and ratios.Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Must be proficient in the use of a computer and related software programs. Must be able to effectively operate standard office equipment.
- Must be able to effectively operate backpack blower, weed eater, self-propelled push mower. Must have knowledge of the effective operations of a greenhouse.
- While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate effectively. The employee regularly is required to stand, walk and sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision.
- While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions, and risk of vibration. Occasionally exposed to the risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
