- Provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees (especially members of their own team), and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive.
- Perform construction and installation of new traffic signals such as laying conduit, drilling, erecting poles and arms, signal pole footings, installing wire, wiring poles and cabinets, setting pull boxes and assembling.
- Maintain and repair existing signals and signal equipment; such as camera detection systems, inductive loops and detectors, radio system, railroad pre-emption, fire/optical pre-emption, signal wiring, controllers, conflict monitors.
- Install and maintain battery backups for uninterrupted power supplies.
- Install and maintain street lighting and overhead roadway lighting.
- Install and maintain Thermo-Plastic pavement markings such as crosswalks, speed table markings and striping.
- Place traffic counters for traffic counts and speed studies used for traffic engineering studies.
- Operate heavy equipment such as trencher, back hoe, loader, forklift, bucket truck, crane truck, etc.
- Fabricate and install signs as needed for traffic control.
- Set up safety work zones pursuant to International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) guidelines when working near vehicular traffic flow.
- Responsible for inventory and provide assistance in ordering supplies.
- Install signage as detailed in new subdivision plats according to traffic manual for 911 locations, street markers and regulatory signs as needed.
- Responsible for vegetation removal for sight distance and clear vision of signage.
- Ability to prioritize needs for public safety.
- Serve in an on-call status as assigned to respond to after-hours service needs.
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
- Perform secondary duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED and two (2) years of related experience.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Must obtain IMSA Certifications, Work Zone Safety, Signs and Markings I, Traffic Signal I, Traffic Signal II certifications within two years of hire date.
- Obtain training from the Urban Forestry Staff for proper tree cutting techniques.
- Effectively communicate with others orally and in writing.
- Have the ability to become proficient in the use of equipment used for sign installation and maintenance, as well as sign design and fabrication software and equipment.
- Ability to learn and properly use equipment such as hydraulic post driver, hydraulic core drill, acetylene cutting torch, Summagraphic T1010 Plotter/Cutter, pneumatic sheeting applicator, and numerous hand and cordless power tools.
- Must be proficient in the use of a computer and standard office software programs. Must be able to effectively operate standard office equipment.
- Must be capable of effectively operating plotter, bucket truck, crane truck, electronic sign equipment, forklift and hydraulic tools.
- While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear for safety reasons or to operate specific equipment. The employee regularly is required to stand, walk, and sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision as well as vision abilities to accomplish computer, electrical and electronic work.
- While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; and risk of vibration.
