The City of Fayetteville is currently recruiting for a Forensic Technician to perform difficult technical work in the processing/investigation of crime scenes; processing may involve detailed documentation of bloodstain patterns and shooting incidents. Perform laboratory processing and documentation of evidence for fingerprints, biological/DNA evidence, hairs and fibers, and other evidence relating to the crime being investigated. Complete detailed and accurate reports and testify in a court of law regarding results of crime scene investigations, evidence processing and reports completed. Testimony is often significant in court proceedings. Work requires the exercise of independent judgment and initiative.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Respond to various types of crime and accident scenes; record detailed and accurate physical description of the scene; search for, collect and preserve evidence; photograph the scene and evidence; document evidence and scene, process as required.
- Examine surfaces and process for latent prints and other latent traces of evidence including hair, blood, paint, tool marks, and other items; conduct presumptive test for blood and other evidence.
- Photograph persons arrested for crimes, decedents and other persons involved in criminal investigations.
- Maintain all crime scene and evidence processing tools, equipment and supplies; maintain log inventory, assignments, and production and work sheets as required.
- Obtain an account of events from relevant parties; effectively communicate with police officers, detectives, and forensic technician(s) regarding actions taken on scenes.
- Complete requests for forensic services in reference to examining, analyzing, evaluating, and processing physical evidence gathered at crime scenes, to include vehicles. Photograph and document related information; prepare detailed and accurate reports of crime scene findings. Appropriately forward results for review.
- Package, label and seal items to preserve for further scientific examination; ensure chain of custody for evidence is maintained.
- Establish, maintain, and update a variety of databases, files and records relating to reports, evidence collection and preservation.
- Cooperate with other law enforcement agencies regarding forensic mutual aid/assistance requests; attend meetings, conferences and seminars.
- Prepare evidence for court presentations; testify in court as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:
No experience needed. One-year experience as a crime scene investigator with a law enforcement agency or similar employment is preferred.
Education:
Equivalent to an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Criminal Justice, Natural/Forensic Science, or a related field or four semesters as a full-time student, with a minimum of forty-eight (48) credit hours completed, from an accredited college or university with the successful completion of a full twelve (12) week internship with the Fayetteville Police Department. Additional coursework in forensic science, crime scene and evidence, and crime scene photography is desirable.
LICENSING & CERTIFICATIONS:
Required:
Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license and ability to maintain insurability.
Preferred:
International Association for Identification (IAI) and Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) Certification.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- This position is subject to pre-employment polygraph and/or CVSA testing.
- Must be at least twenty (20) years and six (6) months of age by closing date of the job positing.
