The City of Fayetteville is currently recruiting for a Vehicle Electronics Technician in the Transit department to perform technical work associated with the Transit Department’s Vehicle Maintenance Division, to include troubleshooting, installing, configuring, deploying, maintaining, repairing and removing electronic equipment in transit vehicles vehicle on-board fleet management systems, other Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) devices, surveillance equipment, radio communications systems, electronic systems, revenue collection equipment and other related equipment; to prepare reports related to unit operations and maintain related records; monitor software on all Transit vehicles; train Transit employees in proper use of all equipment.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Recommend, test, install, implement and maintain appropriate hardware and software for on-board fleet management systems; assist users with problems; check, maintain and perform repairs of on-board equipment and software.
  2. Assist maintenance leadership as the subject matter expert on all technologies supporting the Transit Division (GIS, CityWorks and/or like programs); make recommendations for future improvements and upgrades, and review, evaluate and aid in modifying policies related to use of routing software.
  3. Receive, evaluate and respond to requests for technical services; review requests for surveillance/intelligence to determine equipment needs.
  4. Install, troubleshoot, test, maintain, program, upgrade, and/or operate a variety of technical surveillance equipment, electronic systems (and other related electronics equipment) and radio communications to include mobile radios, portable radios, audio systems, video systems, mobile data system and terminals, security systems, vehicle system fuse boxes, circuit breakers and modems and fueling management systems.
  5. Maintain hardware and software inventory, records, databases and maintain appropriate parts inventory and procure parts as necessary; coordinate service calls with vendors and/or original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for replacement parts; recommend improvements to reduce the use of resources and increase capacity to work units; provide documentation for budget purposes.
  6. Manage the data from the department’s utilization of the equipment on the refuse trucks and act as liaison between department employees and software subject matter experts to resolve issues and recommend improvements.
  7. Maintain inventory, coordinate repairs, replacement and software upgrades with video system vendors, and issue rosters of all departmental surveillance equipment, mobile data computers, pagers, cell-phones and components.
  8. Install, troubleshoot, and repair all in-vehicle video systems (analog and digital systems).
  9. Propose modifications to the policy and procedures manual for relevant processes; maintain and update manual; provide user instructions to Transit staff on the proper use of electronic equipment in Transit vehicles


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provided the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:


Experience:

Two years of experience with maintenance and installation of vehicle electronics and technology equipment. One year of experience with parts or equipment inventory is preferred.


Training:

Equivalent to an Associate’s degree from an accredited technical college or university with major course work in electronics, Management of Information Systems (MIS), radio communication systems, or a related field.


LICENSING & CERTIFICATIONS:

Required:

Possession of an appropriate valid driver’s license; possession of or the ability to obtain a Class B CDL with an endorsement for air brakes and passenger endorsement within six (6) months of hire, and ability to maintain insurability.
