What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard-Temp position at City of Flagstaff?
Actively supports and upholds the City's stated mission and values. Employees of this class provide lifeguard and/or swimming instruction duties associated with the Aquatics program. These positions are under the direct supervision of the Recreation Program Coordinator and the general supervision of the full-time tenure-eligible Aquatics staff. This is a temporary Recreation position.
EXAMPLES OF THE WORK PERFORMED (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
- Monitors the activities of patrons in the pool area.
- Performs rescue and life-saving techniques.
- Monitors the condition of the swimming pool and ensures that the facility and equipment is safe and usable.
- Regularly logs pool chemicals as directed.
- May clean the pool, deck, and locker room areas according to standards set by management. Includes contact with household chemicals and pool testing kits.
- May demonstrate, teach, and lead American Red Cross Water Safety classes.
- Assists with planning and implementing Aquatics special events.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.
- Actively communicates with Supervisor regarding changes in availability.
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certificate AND Current American Red Cross First Aid and CPR certificates or ability to obtain within 30 days (the City of Flagstaff can facilitate with a 3 day training post-hire).
- Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certificate, or be willing to obtain certification within 6 months of employment.
- Due to safety sensitive nature of this position, pre-employment or pre-placement alcohol, drug and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policies and procedures
- Some experience as a Lifeguard.
- Some experience teaching swimming at all levels (beginner to advanced) and age groups.
- Competitive swimming experience.
- Some experience with adaptive aquatics.
- Ability to work split shifts, weekdays, weekends, early mornings, and/or evenings as assigned.
- Fingerprint clearance if over 18 years of age
- Ability to perform lifeguard duties according to American Red Cross and City of Flagstaff standards.
- Knowledge of swimming techniques and Aquatics equipment.
- Ability to administer first aid and CPR.
- Ability to work effectively with patrons, supervisor, co-workers, and public.
