GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Serves as a key resource to the Communications Director and performs a vital role in executing the City of Flint’s Communications strategies. Functions as the primary liaison for communication activities related to Police, Fire, Department of Public Works and Blight departments. Additionally, provides support to the overall City of Flint communication initiatives. Assists in managing media relations, developing messaging, and coordinating communication efforts across various platforms.SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direct supervision of the City Administrator.SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Directs the work of others in communication activities as required.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Serves as the primary communications liaison for the Police, Fire, DPW, Blight and other departments as assigned. Performs the duties and responsibilities of the Director in his/her absence. Develops and implements communication plans specific to each department.Works closely with department heads to address media inquiries and proactively communicate with the public.Crafts key messages and materials related to departmental initiatives, programs, and events.Responds to public inquiries and concerns related to these departments.Cultivates and maintains relationships with local, regional, and national media outlets.Assist in preparing city officials for media appearances and interviews.Writes, edits, and proofreads a variety of communications materials, including website content, social media posts, newsletters, presentations, and reports.Ensures all communications are consistent with the City's brand and messaging guidelines.Undertakes special projects and assignments as directed.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Strong understanding of media relations principles and practices.Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.Experience in government or public sector communications is a plus.Knowledge of digital media platforms and social media strategies.
