What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance B position at City of Florence, Alabama?
Maintenance “B” is under the direct supervision of Maintenance “A” or the Superintendent of Treatment Plants. Employee performs routine, preventative, or emergency maintenance at the treatment plants, wastewater lift stations, water booster stations, and wells as required. Employee performs unassisted routine, preventative, and emergency equipment maintenance along with other duties such as grass cutting, cleaning, and truck driving as required. Employee operates biosolids treatment equipment and applies biosolids to designated sites as required.
Supervision:
Employee works independently without direct supervision. General supervision by Treatment Plant Superintendent and/or Lead Maintenance “A.”
Physical Demands (with or without accommodations):
Spreader truck, work truck, various tools for maintenance repairs of water/wastewater equipment, lawn mowers, weed eaters.

- Performs various maintenance activities as assigned; including but not limited to, changing oil, replacing drive belts, lubricating bearings, and changing or cleaning equipment air filters.
- Repair, replace, or rebuild positive displacement and centrifugal pumps, chemical pumps, gearboxes, air compressors, blowers, lawn equipment, electric motors, screening units, or any other miscellaneous equipment.
- Troubleshooting and calibration associated with water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, water wells, water storage tanks, wastewater lift stations, and booster stations.
- Assures that all equipment is maintained in good working order at all times.
- Performs scheduled preventative maintenance of all equipment as per the equipment manufacturer’s recommendations. Maintains equipment in clean condition.
- Maintains accurate records as required of all routine, preventative, and emergency maintenance work performed daily.
- Performs various “housekeeping” and “clean-up” duties as assigned
- Applies protective coatings (paint) to equipment and/or structures as assigned.
- Maintains work area in a clean and safe environment. At all times, the work area is to be free of loose materials, oils, rags, or other materials that could cause injury to self, other employees, or visitors at the treatment plants, booster stations, and lift stations.
- Work areas that may pose a risk of injury are to be clearly identified and marked with a “caution tap.”
- Maintains the maintenance of treatment plant lawns, including cutting, weed eating, spraying, etc.
- Reports to work for after-hours and emergencies as required.
- Reports to work on days and times scheduled by Lead Maintenance “A” or Treatment Plant Superintendent.
- Maintains an effective working relationship with co-workers and management.
- Operates biosolids treatment section as required.
- Applies biosolids to designated sites with a spreader truck as required (CDL required).
- Performs other duties that may be assigned by the Superintendent of Treatment Plants within the scope of this job.
- High School Diploma or GED Certificate.
- Must have a minimum of 3 years of working experience in the maintenance of equipment associated with water or wastewater treatment plants, wells, booster stations, and lift stations.
- Must have a valid Alabama Class “A” CDL license or obtain within 6 months of employment.
- Must have State of Alabama Grade II Water or Wastewater Certification of Competency; or, obtain within 24 months of employment date.
- Must have full working knowledge of the operational aspects of each facility.
- Must know the effects each piece of equipment has on the operations of that facility.
- Must have working knowledge of maintenance repairs to water/wastewater equipment and the ability to maintain and repair equipment.
- Must have knowledge of biosolids and the ability to apply biosolids using a spreader truck.
- Must be able to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Must be able to apply the concepts of basic mathematics.
- Must have the ability to apply common sense understanding and the ability to carry out instructions provided in written, oral, or diagram form.

Employee works independently without direct supervision. General supervision by Treatment Plant Superintendent and/or Lead Maintenance “A.”

- Ability to climb, stoop, and bend to perform some job functions.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time
- Ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
