JOB SUMMARY

At the direction of the Maintenance Lead and Manager of Public Utilities, this position checks and performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on mechanical, electrical, and various equipment utilized on the City’s Drinking Water System, Wastewater Treatment Plant and Lift Stations. This role works with a team of treatment plant operators/staff to facilitate repairs on equipment as needed. Performs preventative maintenance on a variety of equipment and light corrective maintenance. Will work with other City departments and City personnel, as needed. This is a hybrid position spanning operations and maintenance to enhance the department’s dedication to the preventative maintenance program. This position is focused on critical assets and utilizing preventative maintenance measures. This will be accomplished using the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software. This position will coordinate with staff, maintenance staff, and management staff to prioritize work to minimize critical asset failure and extend the life of assets (equipment) in the City’s water and wastewater system.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Work independently or with others in performing predictive or preventative maintenance, as well as minor repair work, associated with maintaining mechanical/electrical equipment associated with the City’s water system, wastewater plant, or lift stations.
  • Inspect all equipment for any signs of wear and perform repairs to include replacing belts, oil seals and bearings, fuses, lights, electric motors, electrical outlets, etc.
  • Respond to maintenance related issues during emergencies after hours.
  • Completes and records work order information for documentation in the CMMS/Asset Management application (Hach Wims).
  • Note condition assessments and useful life in the CMMS/Asset Management application (Hach Wims).
  • Report on the status of completed work and backlogged work to the Maintenance Lead or Manager of Public Utilities.
  • Coordinate with maintenance, operators, and public works employees as necessary.
  • Responsible for adding new or modifying preventative maintenance requirements for new or existing equipment with the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) (Hach Wims).
  • Lubricate, maintain, and rebuild pumps, gearboxes, and other treatment equipment to maintain optimum working conditions.
  • Maintain a tool inventory and other stored tools.
  • Operate a backhoe, crane, or dump truck as necessary.
  • Perform duties of plant operator or well operator as necessary.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Employee will be subject to recall to duty in cases of emergency.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety rules for equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of pumping hydraulics and dynamics.
  • Knowledge of welding, soldering, and brazing.
  • knowledge of water or wastewater equipment.
  • Knowledge of purchasing procedures and maintaining inventory for parts.
  • Knowledge of working with electrical systems.
  • Ability to diagnose electrical system malfunctions.
  • Ability to respond to locations, diagnose problems, and repair equipment to ensure compliance.
  • Ability to anticipate operational problems and plan prevention measures before operations stop.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment such as a backhoe and crane truck.
  • Ability to lift fifty (50) pounds.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Maintenance Trainee may lead a team of Operators or other City staff in small projects where a supervisor is not needed.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include plant regulations, City and department policies and procedures, federal and state guidelines, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of varied water and wastewater maintenance duties. Hazardous conditions and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to ensure proper maintenance of the City’s water and wastewater treatment facilities. Success in this position helps ensure safe and clean operations of the City’s water and wastewater treatment systems.

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, Public Works department employees, and the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to provide services and to give or exchange information.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching.
  • The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes a sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in a stockroom, warehouse, a very noisy place, outdoors, and occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and contagious or infection diseases or irritating chemicals. The work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

This position may take the lead on small projects where a supervisor is not needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Technical school diploma in related field preferred but not required.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Three years of experience in working with water or wastewater equipment.
  • Required to have possession of or ability to obtain, and maintain, a Class 3 Maintenance Technologies License after two years of start date of employment.
  • Required to have possession of or ability to obtain, and maintain, other licenses required to work in the Water and Wastewater industry.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the minimum level of qualifications stated above.

PAY GRADE

  • Grade 9
