Under limited supervision, this position develops and conducts programs for children and caregivers which encourages reading, viewing, and listening skills, and the use of Library facilities and materials. Engages in outreach to schools, community organizations, and agencies that serve children and caregivers to further the mission of the Library. Pursues and applies for grant funding for children's programs. Selects and purchases materials for the children's and young adult areas. Evaluates and maintains children's collections and oversees withdrawals of those materials. Works in a team environment with other Library staff to maintain daily operations, plan and execute activities / events, and to ensure that the Library is maintaining its vision within the community. Reports to the Library Director.
Essential Functions - Children's Division
- Assesses and responds on a regular and systematic basis to the needs and preferences of children, their caregivers, educators, and other adults who use the resources of the Children and Youth Services Department.
- Instructs and supports children in the physical and digital use of library tools and resources, information gathering, and research skills; empowers all children, families, and their caregivers to choose materials and services on their own.
- Designs, promotes, presents, and evaluates a variety of diverse programs for children, considering the principles of child development as well as the needs, interests, and goals of all children, their caregivers, and educators in the community.
- Delivers programs outside and inside the library, as well as digitally, to meet users where they are, addressing community and educational needs.
- Demonstrates knowledge, management, use, and appreciation of children's literature, multimodal materials, digital media, and other materials that contribute to a diverse, current, and relevant children's collection.

Finally, each employee must immediately report any unsafe work practices or unsafe conditions as well as any on-the-job injury or illnesses.
Education and Experience :
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university in Library Science or a related field and three (3) years of experience in a job related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is sedentary work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and / or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
The City's group insurance is currently through Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama . The employees' health, vision, hearing and dental premiums are paid in full by the City. The City pays 50% of family coverage. The employee cost for family health, vision and hearing is $67.47 per semi-monthly deduction cycle and dental is $10.00 per semi-monthly deduction cycle.
