Under the general supervision of the Deputy Fire Marshal, the Fire Prevention Officer promotes community awareness of public safety, emergency preparedness and fire prevention issues; plans, organizes and presents programs in the City through safety inspections, community relations and education. This non-sworn position works closely with, and provides support to, sworn chief officers and company officers based upon the needs of the department.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all the duties listed. Implement various codes and ordinances pertaining to building design, construction, life safety equipment and fire protection systems.Perform inspections on existing buildings of various occupancies, determines compliance with applicable codes, standards and ordinances, makes recommendations and corrections relative to code and ordinance requirements.Issue inspection notices and follow up as required to assure compliance.Assist property, building owners and tenants in resolving code violations and corrective actions to the satisfaction of the community and stakeholders.Provide technical advice and assistance as requested to chief and company officers regarding fire & life safety requirements.Issue permits for hazardous activities and or processes as required by federal, state, and city codes.Represent the Fire Department at special events and participate in public education activities.Verify compliance of local and state regulations related to safe and sane fireworks and public fireworks shows.Verify compliance of local and state regulations related to wildfire defensible space and vegetation management.Serve as an advocate for the department’s wildfire preparedness program (Ready-Set-Go) with members of the public.Represent the department within various groups and organizations, (e.g., the Folsom Fire Safe Council, Citizens Assisting Public Safety (CAPS), Safe Kids Greater Sacramento Coalition, Vial of Life, and other safety initiatives) designed to support the community.Assist in training department personnel in fire prevention practices and procedures.Assist in maintaining department access key systems into buildings and sites.Plan and conduct educational programs on fire safety, water safety, injury and fall prevention; speaks before school groups and other organizations on public safety, fire prevention and other public safety subjects.Plan, organize and conduct community outreach programs to promote safety, risk reduction and fire prevention.Prepare brochures, flyers, posters, press releases and other materials for presentations to the public and community agencies; works closely with City departments in promoting outreach activities.Prepare and distribute emergency preparedness messages via various social communication systems used by the department.Perform minor plan review and fire related construction inspections.Perform other duties as required.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12) grade. Highly Desirable: An Associates of Science or Arts degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in fire technology, public administration, health care, business, building construction, criminal justice, communications, mathematics, education, engineering, liberal arts, or a related field. Experience: Two (2) years of responsible work experience that has included substantial public contact related to public safety or three years of responsible public contact experience. Experience in fire life safety and construction inspections is highly desirable. License, Certificate, Registration Requirements: Possession of, or ability to obtain and retain, a California Class C driver license by the time of appointment. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Successful completion of Fire Prevention 1A, 1B and 1C courses by the California State Fire Training System within twelve (12) months of appointment. Physical Requirements: Work is performed in a typical office and field environment. (1) Mobility: frequent use of keyboard; frequent sitting for long periods of time; frequent bending or squatting. (2) Lifting: frequently up to 50 pounds; occasionally up to 75 pounds. (3) Vision: constant use of overall vision; frequent reading and close-up work; occasional color and depth vision. (4) Dexterity: frequent repetitive motion; frequent writing; frequent grasping, holding, and reaching. (5) Hearing/ Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person and on the phone. (6) Emotional/ Psychological: frequent decision-making and concentration; frequent public and/or coworker contact; occasional working alone.
