SUMMARY : The City of Fort Collins Natural Areas is seeking to add a Planning Intern to our dynamic and community-focused Planning and Special Projects (PSP) team. This part-time (32hrs / wk), temporary (approximately May through September) Planning intern will complete a variety of planning support tasks to assist the PSP team with both office and field duties. These duties will include work on visitor use surveying, community outreach, ecological conditions monitoring, and equity and inclusion initiatives. Work on these efforts supports the broader City mission to foster a thriving and engaged community. This position will be well suited to an individual who is interested in natural resources planning, engaging diverse audiences, outdoor recreation, and ecological restoration.
The Planning Technician will also have the opportunity to complete shadowing with other branches of the Natural Areas Department including, but not limited to, Ecological Management, Public Engagement, Rangers, and Trails and Visitor Amenities. These opportunities will be designed to introduce the technician to the wide variety of career opportunities that can be found within the natural resources field at a local governmental agency.
This position is 50% in the office, 50% in the field. Applicants must have the ability to work a flexible work schedule, including hours of the day and weekends. The office is located at the Natural Areas buildings at Nix Farm in Fort Collins. This position does not provide insurance or retirement benefits.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the potential primary functions based on the specialization of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.
- Conducts visitor use intercept surveys in the field on randomly selected days, including weekends, at various natural areas.
- Populates and maintains a detailed database of visitor use information.
- Collects bathymetry data on natural area ponds via self-propelled watercraft.
- Assists in the development of a GIS database of pond related data.
- Develops night sky monitoring protocol for volunteers.
- Assist with refining Natural Areas accessibility guidelines based on community feedback.
- Supports planning and delivering outreach activities and events for diverse audiences including presentations, events, workshops, classes, and business outreach.
- Attends and contributes to various staff meetings.
- Is an ambassador for the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Department by communicating the City's goals, management philosophies, and key messages.
- Uses appropriate safety practices.
- Maintains equipment and inventory and prepares supplies for events.
- Meets deadlines and uses time, materials, and resources efficiently and cost-effectively.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSABILITIES : This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE : Associate'sor bachelor's degree from an accredited two orfour-year college or university in human dimensions of natural resources, environmentalscience, urban planning, GIS, forestry, wildlife biology, natural resources, orrelated field preferred. College level juniors or seniors will be consideredwho demonstrate work or volunteer experience related to the natural resourcesfield.
LANGUAGE SKILLS :
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS : Valid driver's license required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS : Thephysical demands described here are representative of those that must be met byan employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. WORK ENVIRONMENT : Work will occur both indoors and out. The outdoorcomponent will occur in varying weather conditions. Conditions may, at times,be severe. This position will require work outside of normal business hours,including weekends.
