The City of Fort Dodge Public Works department is currently seeking a maintenance worker in their streets division. Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative only; not all types of equipment are listed)
Demonstrates an ability to receive project instructions and perform assigned tasks.
Performs highly specialized and skilled maintenance and construction work such as concrete removal, sawing, base stabilization, setting forms, calculates concrete to be used, pours and finishes concrete;
Perform crack sealing, asphalt lay down, blading, pot hole, street sweeping, and leaf pick-up activities to maintain the City’s street infrastructure;
Ensures tools and equipment are maintained in good condition;
Notifies management of supplies necessary to complete assigned projects;Reviews materials used and construction procedures for adherence to specifications or accepted standards;
Subject to standby duty and performs emergency and routine repairs as necessary during time periods outside normal work hours;
Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures and safety practices.
Active participant in continuous process improvement initiatives and demonstrates ingenuity, inventiveness, efficiency and safety in the performance of assigned tasks.
Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner, using empathetic listening skills, and maintaining an attitude that conveys respect, assistance, honesty and resourcefulness;
Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
Graduation from High School or GED and two (2) years work experience as a laborer/driver;
or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Required valid Iowa Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with air brake and tanker endorsements and no suspensions or revocation for moving violations within the past two years.
Preferred special qualifications: Valid Iowa Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A.
CPR and First Aid Certified.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of methods, practices, techniques, equipment, tools, materials and supplies used in street and highway construction, maintenance and repair;
Thorough knowledge of the operation of tools used in street construction and maintenance including backhoes, rollers, lay down equipment, concrete mixers, excavators, milling machine, crack sealers and hand power tools;
Capable and willing to operate any piece of equipment used in department operations such as:
Front-loader, flusher, backhoe/breaker, sand spreader, durapatch, asphalt roller, snow plow, tractor and dump truck, road grader, street sweeper, maintainer, crack sealer, snow blower, leaf vac and other light and medium-heavy equipment used in street maintenance and repair; standard safety equipment.
Knowledge of construction and building trades including carpentry, concrete, and maintenance;
Knowledge of traffic hazards and traffic safety principles, practices and procedures;
Ability to perform light maintenance on equipment and report complex problems to mechanics;
Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures and instructions;
Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
Knowledge of and ability to operate and maintain light and heavy equipment in complex situations safely and efficiently;
Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;
Ability to work cooperatively and to maintain effective working relationships to accomplish job responsibilities;
