We are looking for a Latent Fingerprint Examiner who will be working in a crime laboratory collecting, examining, analyzing, and comparing latent fingerprints. This is advanced technical work in fingerprint, palm print and footprint identification using Analysis, Comparison, Evaluation, and Verification (ACE-V) methodology.

An employee in this class applies advanced knowledge and skill in revealing the existence of latent fingerprint evidence, in the positive identification of such evidence and in the subsequent legal presentation of evidence and testimony in court.

In accordance with Article 24 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769, for posting purposes this open-competitive job posting shall be considered as a simultaneous internal and external posting (it is open to both internal City employees and external applicants).

Essential Job Functions

Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.   • Develops and maintains a latent print file by case number on all identified and unidentified fingerprints, palmprints and footprints developed from crime scenes
  • Provides latent identification services for other municipalities, counties, state and federal agencies.
  • Assists in the recovery and positive identification of persons fallen victim to man-made or natural disasters.
  • Develops, evaluates, compares, identifies and prepares latent fingerprints for court exhibits, and renders expert testimony in all courts of law.
  • Fingerprint persons seeking employment, gun permits, or licenses as private investigators; inks fingers and rolls onto cards.
  • Fingerprint persons seeking employment with the Police department using Live Scan and also inked fingerprint and palm prints to be kept on file within the latent office
  • Takes ink fingerprints of suspects in court, jail or in the Chronological In-Depth (CID) Interview room
  • Takes ink fingerprints of victims and witness prints for elimination purposes
  • Utilizes the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) for search of latent prints generated from criminal cases, in attempt to make positive identification.
  • Searches files for information in response to requests from other law enforcement agencies; corresponds with other agencies and exchanges identification information.
  • Performs related work as required.

Job Requirements & Work Environment

Bachelor's Degree in forensic science, criminal justice or closely related field Three (3) years of experience as a Latent Print Examiner. Additional qualifying experience or completion of coursework at an accredited college or university in a job related field, may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience or education.Have successfully completed a recognized basic and advanced fingerprint classification course. Have successfully completed a recognized Latent Fingerprint Examiner course. Successful completion of an Advanced Latent Fingerprint School is highly desirable.Successfully complete an in-depth employment background check, including a polygraph exam, will be conducted as part of the post offer onboarding process as this position is deemed security sensitivePossess or be able to obtain a valid State of Florida driver’s license within 30 days of hire. If claiming Veteran's Preference, candidates must attach a DD214 Member 4 form, and the City of Fort Lauderdale's veteran's preference claim form (J-204) to the online application.

Special Requirements

As public servants, employees may be required to work immediately before, during, and/or after an emergency. All employees must be available and able to work assigned shifts as determined by their Department Heads.

Essential Employees may be required to work during a declared emergency. The employee’s Department Head will determine who will be required to work.

Physical Standards Required To Perform Essential Job Functions

The position involves light physical demands, such as exerting up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
