What are the responsibilities and job description for the Parking Enforcement Specialist position at City of Fort Lauderdale?
Position Summary
This job classification is included within the bargaining unit represented by Teamsters Local Union 769 and therefore is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769. In accordance with Article 24 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769, for posting purposes this open-competitive job posting shall be considered as a simultaneous internal and external posting (it is open to both internal City employees and external applicants).
Patrols assigned City zones for parking violations, traffic problems or vehicles with outstanding parking debt owed to the City. Resolves violations by issuing parking tickets, educating drivers on options to avoid future violations, and ordering towing of immobilized vehicles.
Note
This position requires being able to work assigned shifts, including work on nights, weekends, and holidays. New hires are required to train for at least one month in two of the following three shifts: 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM, 11:00 AM to 9:30 PM, and/or 4:30 PM to 3:00 AM before being placed into an annual shift assignment. Annual shift selections are based on classification seniority so new hires are typically required to work the 4:30 PM to 3:00 AM shift for at least the first year of employment. Parking Enforcement hours are based on operational needs.

The position involves medium physical demands, such as exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Position requires a lot of walking and extended periods on your feet. Significant amount of time standing kneeling and bending . The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. - Mitigates traffic congestion and promotes parking turnover by the consistent enforcement of parking regulations, resulting in available parking
- Patrols an assigned area and inspects meters and vehicles for violations of parking regulations; writes summons in case of violation
- Explains applicable parking regulations and procedures for disposition of summons to vehicle operator
- Cites illegally parked vehicles and calls towing company
- Troubleshoots problem situations and performs inspections of valet parking operations and recommends suspension or revocation of valet parking permits
- Reports broken meters, missing signage and any situations which may be dangerous for follow-up by the appropriate City department.
- Educates drivers on options to avoid future violations and towing immobilized vehicles
- Enforces state and local parking ordinances, including time limitations
- Provides ambassador services by giving information, directions and assistance to the general public when requested
- Directs motorists away from incidents and/or assists local law enforcement with traffic direction
- Immobilizes vehicles on the City scofflaw (three or more outstanding violations) list; collects outstanding fines and fees when called upon to remove immobilization devices on vehicles
- Provides traffic direction during special events, road closures and open and closing of parking lots and facilities
- Assist Police Department with traffic direction and street closure
- Performs related work as required
