Under the general direction of the Evidence/Property supervisor, the incumbent is responsible for the proper intake, handling, preservation, storage and final disposition of evidence and/or property held by the Police department. This job has no supervisory responsibilities

Responsibilities and Reporting During an Emergency Situation:

Essential Employees may be required to work during a declared emergency. Depending on the nature of the emergency, this may require working around the clock for several days on short notice.

Non Essential Employees will not be required to work during a declared emergency. The employee's Department Head will determine when the employee will be required to work.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Fulfill requests from the State Attorney's Office, Detectives and Officers.
  • Fulfill Public Information Requests, expungements/seals and citizen property requests.
  • Intake, inventory and release evidence and/or property received from police officers and/or civilian personnel.
  • Handle phone calls and questions from citizens regarding property and evidence.
  • Scan property and evidence related forms into the report management system.
  • Prepare and deliver or mail evidence to laboratory for processing.
  • Prepare, check-out and release evidence for court as needed.
  • Prepare and mail certified letters to property owners of seized property authorized for release (vehicles and valuables).
  • Follow up with Detectives and Officers regarding release/disposal of property and evidence.
  • Drive a motor vehicle for deliveries, inspections and other property and evidence related tasks.
  • This position requires regular and reliable attendance and the employee's physical presence at the workplace.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Proficient in the use of word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations.
  • Ability to operate necessary equipment, including personal computer, scanners, calculator, copier, printers, facsimile machine and other standard office equipment.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Six months of experience in related field with related responsibilities; and/or training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Mandatory Drug/Alcohol Testing required
  • A valid Florida Driver's License with an acceptable driving record
  • External candidates must submit to a complete background investigation including fingerprint check and polygraph (lie detector).

  • Reaching – extending hands or arms in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion – substantial movements of wrists, hands, fingers.
  • Speaking – expressing ideas with spoken word, convey detailed, important instructions accurately, concisely.
  • Standing – for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping – bending body downward, forward at waist, with full motion of lower extremities and back.
  • Talking 1- expressing ideas by spoken word
  • Talking 2 – shouting to be heard above ambient noise.
  • Visual Acuity 1 - prepare, analyze data, transcribing, computer terminal, extensive reading.
  • Visual Acuity 2 - color, depth perception, field of vision.
  • Visual Acuity 3 - determine accuracy, neatness, observe facilities/structures.
  • Kneeling – bending legs at knee to come to rest at knees.
  • Lifting – raising objects from lower to higher position, moving objects side to side, using upper extremities, back.
  • Mental Acuity – ability to make rational decisions through sound logic, deductive reasoning.
  • Pulling - use upper extremities to exert force, haul or tug.
  • Visual Acuity 4 - operate motor vehicles/heavy equipment.
  • Visual Acuity 5 -close acuity for inspection of small defects, machines, use measurement devices, or fabricate parts.
  • Walking - on foot to accomplish tasks, long distances, or site to site.
Work performed is primarily:
  • Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Contact with internal and external customers, vendors, outside agencies and the general public.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; biohazard (biologicals and narcotic exposure) outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat; and vibration. Risk of electrical shock.
  • May be required to work hours other than the regular schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays.
