Job Title: Street Maintenance
Department: Public Works
Reports To: Street Supervisor/Public Works Manager
FLSA Status: Nonexempt
Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Street Supervisor/Public Works Manager, the Street Maintenance position maintains and repairs the City streets, alleys, and parking lots. This position requires considerable skill in the operating of heavy street maintenance equipment with complex controls. The Street Maintenance position maintains roadway easements by cleaning ditches, storm sewers, mowing and trimming trees by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Directs and follows all City safety policies and procedures.
- CDL license is not required but would be compensated for.
- Operates heavy equipment such as a grader, loader, backhoe, street sweeper, oil distributor, paving machine, mower, dump truck and roller.
- Concrete experience a plus
- Grades roads and ditches.
- Loads and unloads sand, gravel and other materials on trucks.
- Removes snow and ice from roadways.
- Performs equipment maintenance tasks.
- Sits up traffic barricades and other safety related signs or identification devices to restrict or halt traffic flow while road work is being performed.
- Performs additional duties as needed or required.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
CDL drivers license is a plus but not required (additional compensation for CDL license) and must meet City’s driving history guidelines.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee frequently is required to walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
