Police Fleet Coordinator

SUMMARY
The Fleet Coordinator, under the supervision of the Support Services Supervisor, is responsible for maintaining the entire fleet of vehicles utilized by the Fort Smith Police Department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Note: All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times.

1. Troubleshooting issues with department vehicles and facilitating maintenance or repair.

2. Maintain accurate records of all maintenance performed on police department fleet of vehicles.

3. Prior knowledge of automotive mechanics is not necessary, but the ability to learn, and then perform very minor repairs to vehicles is expected. Being mechanically inclined is essential for this task.

4. Dealing with vendors and salespersons.

5. Must be aware of and able to perform the job tasks of Quartermaster should the need arise.

6. Other assignments or duties as needed.

7. Regular attendance and timeliness is required.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High School diploma or GED is required. Because the Fleet Coordinator makes many decisions regarding police equipment, prior experience as a law enforcement officer would be helpful in this position.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES
The incumbent must possess acute organizational skills, be task-oriented, be cost-conscious, and be highly self-motivated. He must be able to make routine mathematical calculations and use proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. He must be able to plan, direct, and coordinate the maintenance and repair of a variety of police vehicles. He must be able to make decisions on prioritizing work to be performed. The incumbent must be adept at maintaining accurate records on service and repair history. The incumbent must be capable of preparing vehicles for special events, such as parades, air shows, static displays, etc.

To be successful, the Fleet Coordinator must possess a thorough knowledge of tools, lubricants, vehicle repair procedures, and maintenance schedules. He must be able to read and understand vehicle service schedules as well as plan, organize, and document both routine and unexpected service work. The incumbent should also have the ability to operate a personal computer and utilize various software applications.

Though not a requirement, prior experience as a law enforcement officer would be helpful in this position. The incumbent must have excellent communications skills in both oral and written forms. He must have a thorough knowledge of state laws and local ordinances as well as a complete working knowledge of the Rules and Regulations and policies and procedures of the Fort Smith Police Department.

The incumbent must possess a valid driver’s license.

The noise level in the work environment while within the police department is usually moderate. Outside the police department, the noise level can be loud.
