Parks Maintenance - Downtown

JOB SUMMARY
The incumbent under the guidance of the Parks Department Supervisor is responsible for maintaining the beauty and integrity of all public spaces in Downtown Fort Smith.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Note: All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times. All other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor and/or department director.

1. Perform litter control throughout Downtown, including, but not limited to, streets, sidewalks, storefronts, public parking lots, alleyways and landscaped areas.
2. Complete routine observations to ensure operability of public spaces and amenities, such as streetscape lighting, traffic/pedestrian signals, irrigation, water features or other items, and report any issues.
3. Assist in minor maintenance tasks, including, but not limited to, irrigation, lighting, trash receptacles, and statues.
4. Perform lawn and landscape duties as required or assigned including planting, weeding, mulching, mowing, edging, and tree trimming.
5. Apply herbicides/pesticides for vegetation control.
6. Remediate graffiti or other vandalism to public spaces.
7. Pressure wash sidewalks as directed.
8. Operate all related equipment and tools.
9. Evening/weekend work may be required.
10. Assist with barricades or traffic control devices for downtown events as directed.
11. Regular attendance and timeliness are required.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of one-year general labor work experience is preferred but not required.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of one-year general landscaping work experience.
  • Minimum of one-year customer service experience.


OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES
  • The incumbent should possess knowledge of all maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Problem solving and analytical ability are required to perform the duties of this position.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also required.
  • The incumbent must have the ability, knowledge, and skills to perform basic janitorial and lawn/landscape projects.
  • Work impacts public perception of city and department.


POSITION DESIGNATIONS
This position is not designated as essential during inclement weather events. This position is not able to work remotely.

This position does have the potential to drive as part of their regular job duties.

This position is designated as a safety/security sensitive position and is subject to random non-DOT drug and alcohol screenings (a safety/security sensitive position is one in which a monetary lapse in attention may result in injury or death of another person).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must frequently stand, walk, talk and hear. Occasionally sit, use hands to handle objects, and reach with arms and hands. The incumbent must also stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, color, distance and peripheral vision. Depth perception and the ability to adjust focus are also necessary.

The employee is required to lift up to 50 pounds.

While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is exposed to outdoor weather conditions, herbicides and pesticides, fumes or airborne particles, and is at risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
