Scale House Attendant
The incumbent, under the guidance of the Superintendent, is responsible for running the landfill gate and processing all incoming and outgoing landfill traffic. The incumbent also answers the landfill phone, providing customer service and information.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Note: All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times.
- Process all incoming and/or outgoing landfill customers.
- Perform initial waste screening for type/location and suitability for disposal.
- Insure incoming commercial customers are properly licensed by appropriate waste management district.
- Perform data entry to City’s computer system for billing purposes, including origin, type of waste and compute based weight or volume per established guidelines and regulations.
- Collect and enter payments and/or applicable charges for waste disposal.
- Enter commercial and industrial charge tickets in computer.
- Operate double scale system (inbound and outbound).
- Handle money from cash customers and maintain cash and charge receipts.
- Direct waste to appropriate disposal areas within landfill.
- Balance cash drawer daily and record deposits.
- Ensure that extra cash is accurate and in quantities needed for making appropriate change.
- Provide information to supervisor to establish new third party hauler truck assignments and accounts for accurate recording.
- Provide customer service via in person or phone.
- Maintain up to date knowledge of services provided and policies by the Sanitation Department and within the scale house operations.
- Answer telephone inquiries.
- Perform various clerical duties as assigned.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Rotation of a Saturday work schedule will be required and holiday work may be required.
- Regular attendance and timeliness is required.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- Must be able to handle cash accurately and effectively.
- Minimum of one year experience in retail or general office work with some experience involving customer service and data entry preferred.
OTHER SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Problem solving, speed and accuracy are required to perform the duties of this position. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also required. Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment is necessary. Must be proficient in the use of a computer and 10 key system.
