SUMMARY
Working under the direct supervision of the Supervisor V – Physical Plant, incumbent is responsible for the care and maintenance of building, grounds, and other assigned areas. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with the City safety rules and operating regulations, policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the ability to interact with the public, City incumbents, and outside agencies with patience, tact, respect, and professionalism and the following. Other duties may be assigned.
OPERATIONS
- Performs all facets of janitorial maintenance in assigned areas;
- Maintains a clean general appearance of assigned areas which includes; buildings, facilities and grounds;
- Performs janitorial work according to daily, weekly, and monthly checklist;
- Adheres to assigned work schedules unless assigned by supervisor;
- Assures that all rented areas are clean, properly set up and ready for scheduled events;
- Sets up tables, chairs, and other items, as diagrammed, and in accordance with established standards;
- Reports vandalism and items in need of repair;
- Performs duties within the guidelines of work rules and safety policies of the City of Fort Wayne and Parks Department;
- Works independently;
- Maintains work reports and records as required;
Preventative Maintenance
- Removes refuse, debris, litter, trash, and graffiti from assigned areas in a timely manner;
- Maintains all equipment assigned in a safe operating condition;
- Keeps work areas clean and orderly;
- Removes snow and ice from around buildings, and operates snow blowers as assigned.
INFORMATION/COMMUNICATION
- Assists in training of other employees;
- Works in harmony with fellow employees and volunteers, and assists volunteers when requested;
- Maintains good relations with park patrons and volunteers;
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs additional duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor;
- Makes moderate repairs to facilities or equipment as needed or directed by supervisor;
- Maintains supplies for cleaning assigned areas;
- Monitors solid waste removal from site and reports needs to supervisor;
- Monitors fluid levels in assigned vehicles;
- Transplants potted plants;
- Sweeps, rakes and weeds paths and flower beds;
- Waters plants.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Knowledge of methods, tools, materials and practices used in janitorial work.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Communicates well both orally and in writing;
- Works in an outdoor environment as required;
- Ability to exert effort for sustained periods which usually involves heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling performed in a non-sitting position with high manual dexterity;
- Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools, vehicles and equipment;
- Ability to work weekends year-round.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Valid Indiana Driver's License.
