Job Description : SUMMARY

Working under the direction of the Program Facility Coordinator-Preschool / Youth, incumbent plans, organizes, coordinates, and supervises staff in rules and lessons in the designated sport activity. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with the city safety rules and operating regulations, policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the ability to interact with the public, city incumbents, and outside agencies with patience, tact, respect, and professionalism and the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Organizes equipment needed to begin programs and distributes equipment kits to staff;
  • Updates / creates rules and regulations for sports / PODS. Creates lesson plans for each daily program;
  • Plans, organizes, and supervises programs. Distributes necessary rosters and attendance to staff; assists with staff schedules
  • Attends Employee Training and leads May staff orientation;
  • Attends all weekly staff meetings;
  • Visits site for resources, assists site staff while sports program is in session, and offers suggestions;
  • Handles day to day staff problems. Fills in as substitute as needed;
  • Relays any unresolved problems to supervisor. Holds weekly staff meeting to review weekly programs, showcases, and gives information for future weeks activity;
  • Performs duties in accordance with the city's safety rules and operating regulations and practices;
  • Writes and submits a narrative summary at end of program
  • Takes inventory and submits all requests for more (new) equipment in writing. Prepares and stores equipment properly;
  • Assists with office work, answering phones, filing, totaling attendance and surveys, etc.;
  • Is responsible for gathering and distributing all equipment and supplies ordered by the staff;
  • Is responsible for personnel evaluations to be completed on all staff;
  • Wears park Department Staff T-shirt at all times during working hours and complies with dress code;

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

Performs other duties as assigned.

Performs duties in accordance with City's safety rules and operating regulations and practices.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

The incumbent is responsible to manage their performance in accordance with this job description and the performance expectations provided to them by management. Management will work with the incumbent, as needed, to ensure performance expectations are clearly communicated and performance goals are achieved.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Incumbent supervises up to 20 Pre-School / Youth Leaders and Pre-School / Youth Staff. Supervision involves the planning, organizing, coordinating staff in rules and lessons in designated sport activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE

  • Must be at least 18 years of age with one year of college and / or Baccalaureate degree preferred in Education or Sports Management and two years of post-high school experience in athletic activities and sports equipment;
  • OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and / or ABILITIES

  • Ability to plan / organize activities;
  • Ability to solve working problems relating to staff, parents and participants; follows through and reports incidents;
  • Possess optimum leadership abilities and have the ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with staff, supervisors and the general public;
  • Specialized knowledge of recreation, teaching, and sports;
  • Working knowledge of personal computer usage with experience in Microsoft Windows software programs;
  • Effective communication skills both orally and in writing;
  • Must work until completion of programs.
  • LANGUAGE SKILLS

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

    Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

    REASONING ABILITY

    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS - Required for Continued Employment

  • Valid Indiana Driver's License if City vehicle is used.
  • Certified in First Aid and CPR by the American Heart Association within two weeks of employment (provided by the City's Risk Management Department).

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
