Under the general supervision of the Director of Parks and Recreation, or their designee, to perform semiskilled work in the maintenance and upkeep of City parks, landscaped areas, public buildings, and associated equipment and structures; to perform routine gardening and landscape work; to learn the more difficult park maintenance skills and job assignments; and to do related work as required.This is the full-time, mid-level, semiskilled classification in the Park Maintenance Worker class series. Incumbents are expected to have some experience in areas related to the tasks to be performed. Job assignments include an emphasis on semi-skilled maintenance and landscaping tasks and semiskilled work in the areas of basic carpentry, electrical, plumbing, concrete, irrigation and painting. Incumbents will learn the more skilled and difficult assignments. Incumbents may assist in the oversight of other workers. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Parks and Recreation, or their designee, and some job assignments may be performed with minimal guidance and supervision with the expectations that incumbents have the ability to choose among alternatives in completing tasks. Work is typically performed outdoors and may include work in inclement weather or unsanitary conditions. Work assignments include heavy physical and manual labor. Work schedule may be flexible and may include weekends.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Makes regular checks of parks and landscaped areas for hazards, trash, and vandalism; operates mowing equipment to maintain lawn and turf areas; maintains and prepares athletic fields for events; picks up debris, trash, and recycling; checks playground areas and structures for safety and hazards; cleans playgrounds and picnic areas; performs routine repairs and maintenance on structures and playground equipment; assists with and learns the more difficult repairs on playground equipment; trims trees, shrubs, and other ground coverings; pull weeds; hauls refuse and cuttings to disposal sites; assists with and learns rough and finished concrete work; assists with and learns a variety of semiskilled and skilled repairs to buildings and park facilities; learns methods of spraying, trapping, and controlling pests and plant diseases; assists with and learns a variety of landscape maintenance techniques; assists with the installation, maintenance, and repair of sprinkler pipes, valves, heads, and control systems; learns to use a variety of tools and parks maintenance equipment; performs heavy physical labor, assists in supervision of volunteers and community service workers. Related work as required.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
High School diploma or GED required. Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the requisite knowledge and abilities would be two (2) years of experience in facility maintenance and grounds keeping including semiskilled work in the areas of basic carpentry, electrical, plumbing, concrete, irrigation and painting.
