Under general direction of the Utility Shift Supervisor, to inspect, clean, maintain, replace and repair the City's water distribution and sewer collection systems; to read meters; to clean, test, and rebuild meters; to operate, to perform underground construction work; and to do related work as required.Utility Worker II ($41,371 - $50,334/year) is the full-time, entry-skill-level position in the Utility Worker class series with responsibility for a wide variety of water distribution and sewer collection maintenance, repair, and construction assignments with general supervision. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Utility Shift Supervisor, and some job assignments may be performed with minimal guidance and supervision with the expectations that incumbents have the ability to choose among alternatives in completing tasks. Work is typically performed outdoors, and may include work in inclement weather, work in a cold and wet environment, and work in confined spaces. Work assignments may include heavy physical and manual labor.Utility Worker III ($45,605 - $55,485/year) is the full-time, advanced-skill-level position in the Utility Worker class series. Incumbents are expected to perform all levels of a wide variety of water distribution and sewer collection maintenance, repair and construction job assignments. Work is done under the general direction of the Utility Shift Supervisor, frequently job assignments may be performed with minimal guidance and supervision with the expectations that incumbents have the ability to choose among alternatives in completing tasks. Work is typically performed outdoors, and may include work in inclement weather, work in a cold and wet environment, and work in confined spaces. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Inspects sewer collection lines for stoppages or damage; unplugs, cleans, and maintains lines with a variety of equipment; sets up traffic safety devices prior to beginning field work; checks manholes for dangerous gasses and uses proper safety precautions when entering underground areas; hydraulically cleans collection lines with high pressure equipment; repairs pressure hoses when necessary; uses power rodding equipment during cleaning operations; digs up and repairs damaged sections of pipe; cuts, installs, threads, and assembles new pipe; operates vehicles and equipment, such as dump truck, vactor machine, backhoe, vibrators, jackhammers, tampers, and cutters; repair or replace valves and fittings; reads meters; cleans, tests, and rebuilds meters; install new water and sewer services; maintains inventories of needed supplies and materials; locates City lines and man-holes; inspects new installations; compacts and paves utility ditches; tests and repairs backflow devices; uses a variety of hand and power tools; performs equipment operation; responds to public complaints; performs heavy physical labor and strenuous activities; responds to emergency repair calls; may work weekends, holidays, and irregular shifts.

Utility Worker II - A typical way to obtain the requisite knowledge and abilities would be two (2) years of responsible, related work such as would be done by a Utility Worker I working for the City of Fortuna.Utility Worker III - A typical way to obtain the requisite knowledge and abilities would be minimum of three (3) years of increasingly responsible, related work experience such as would be done by a Utility Worker II working for the City of Fortuna.Utility Worker IIMaintain a valid California Driver’s License throughout employment. Incumbent may participate in the DMV “Pull Program”.Must be able to obtain a Water Distribution I Certification within 24 months of hire date.Must obtain a Class B California Driver’s License within 6 months of hire date.
