CLASS DEFINITIONThe Maintenance Worker I position may be assigned to the Water, Street or the Sewer/Storm Drain Division within the Public Works Department. The incumbent performs a variety of manual, unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, rehabilitation, and reconstruction of a variety of Public Works duties and services. Assists in the performance of general maintenance support of the Utilities or General Services Divisions including tasks performed for either water distribution and production system facilities and appurtenances, and other water-related duties as assigned or street and sidewalk facilities, graffiti removal, and various other street related functions depending on the area of assignment.
Temporary/part-time employment is restricted to 1,000 hours within a 12-month period (July 1 to June 30) and does not qualify to receive City benefits, except those required by law. Typical work hours are 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on a 4/10 work schedule, Monday to Thursday.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is an entry-level classification performed under general supervision.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
The incumbent works under the general supervision of a Foreman and Supervisor.ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
- Operate a variety of vehicles with or without trailers and motorized equipment.
- Load, lift and carry various materials, equipment, and supplies.
- Operate a variety of power, pneumatic and miscellaneous hand tools in the performance of Public Works maintenance and repair activities.
- Perform strenuous manual work as required including digging, backfilling of trenches, etc.
WHEN ASSIGNED TO WATER DIVISION:
- Perform and assist in the operation, construction, maintenance, rehabilitation and reconstruction of water production, reclaimed water and water distribution facilities, pipelines, connections, fire hydrants, valves, and appurtenances.
- Perform customer service activities such as reading water meters, water turn on/off, meter and communication equipment troubleshooting and repairs, and responding to customer inquiries regarding water-related matters.
- Under general supervision, may check pressure levels, chlorine levels and the status of pumping, regulating and treatment equipment.
WHEN ASSIGNED TO STREET DIVISION:
- Operate pressure washer/sandblaster for graffiti removal and perform graffiti removal services.
- Perform and assist in the removal, replacement, and overlay of a variety of asphalt concrete, street, and highway sections.
- Maintain, repair, and install traffic signs, markings, and street striping.
- Remove, form, pour and finish Portland cement concrete sidewalks, curbs, gutters and other concrete structures.
- Perform preventative maintenance on streets, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, traffic signs and delineation.
WHEN ASSIGNED TO THE SEWER/STORM DRAIN DIVISION:
- Assist in the installation, maintenance, operation, cleaning, and repair of sewer and storm drain pipelines, laterals, catch basins and screens, stormceptors, siphons, manholes, lift stations and enhanced maintenance areas.
- Under general supervision, operate hydrojetter and CCTV camera, computer, and inspection equipment to analyze the sources and locations of obstructions; and report the need for additional maintenance and repair work to access and repair sewer lines and storm drainpipes.
- Perform minor maintenance on assigned equipment, including lubricating parts, making minor adjustments and repairs; and keeping operating records.
- Perform traffic control at the worksite, set up cones, direct traffic and assist the public.
OTHER JOB-RELATED DUTIES:
- Perform and assist in the installation of proper lane closures and traffic control.
- Perform non-journey level work in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, painting, and other similar maintenance and repair trades.
- Maintain accurate logs, records, and reports as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school graduation or equivalent is required.
- College coursework with an emphasis in water technology, public works maintenance or construction is highly desirable.
EXPERIENCE:
None required. General maintenance or construction experience is desirable along with:
WHEN ASSIGNED TO WATER DIVISION:
- Experience in the maintenance and repair of water facilities and appurtenances, preferably in a municipal setting, is highly desirable.
WHEN ASSIGNED TO STREET DIVISION:
- Experience in the maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, and construction of streets, sidewalk, curb and gutter, traffic signs and delineation, preferably in a municipal setting, is highly desirable.
WHEN ASSIGNED TO THE SEWER/STORM DRAIN DIVISION:
- Experience in the maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, and construction of sewer systems or storm drains systems, preferably in a municipal setting, is highly desirable.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL LEVELS:
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, City officials, contractors, and the public.
- Effective verbal communication skills.
- Understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Customer service principles and techniques.
- Proper safety practices and procedures.
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL LEVELS:
Skill in the use and maintenance of small hand tools, power equipment, and other equipment such as jackhammers, compressors, grinders, saw cutters, water blaster and crack fillers.
WHEN ASSIGNED TO WATER DIVISION:
- Methods procedures, tools, equipment and materials used in the construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of water system piping, construction of main lines, valves, blow off valves, water services, meters, hydrants, waterline breaks, and maps.
WHEN ASSIGNED TO STREET DIVISION:
- Methods, procedures, tools, equipment and materials used in the construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, graffiti removal, curbs and gutters, traffic signs and delineation.
WHEN ASSIGNED TO THE SEWER/STORM DRAIN DIVISION:
- Methods procedures, tools, equipment and materials used in the construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of sewer systems and storm drain systems.
REQUISITE ABILITIES:
- Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods and under unfavorable weather conditions.
- Lift and carry heavy objects safely.
- Basic arithmetic calculations and the ability to take measurements.
- Read and understand work orders, drawings, maps, etc.
- Basic knowledge and familiarity in operating a computer and tablet and various computer software programs utilized by the City.
LICENSE REQUIRED:
- Valid California Class "C" Driver's License.
- A commercial driver's license is highly desirable.
- Maintain, at all times, the licensing required for this job classification.
DESIRABLE CERTIFICATIONS:
WHEN ASSIGNED TO WATER DIVISION:
- State Water Distribution Operator Certification is highly desirable.
- State Water Treatment Operator Certification is highly desirable.
WHEN ASSIGNED TO THE SEWER/STORM DRAIN DIVISION:
- California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Collection System Maintenance Certification is highly desirable.
Work will primarily be outdoors with full exposure to the elements but may work indoors as well. Perform strenuous physical labor for extended periods of time requiring physical strength and endurance; drive a City vehicle on City business; operate motorized equipment and machinery; may work under damp conditions and in confined spaces, may work on slippery and uneven surfaces; crouch, sit, stand, walk, bend, crawl, kneel, pull, reach, push, twist, climb ladders and sloping surfaces, grasp, drag, lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds; work above shoulder level with power and/or hand tools for sustained periods of time; may be exposed to dust, pollen, grass, dirt, chemicals, solvents, paint, grease/oil, fumes, electrical, and mechanical hazards, vehicular traffic, vibration and noise, work with machinery; meet the physical requirements of the class and have mobility, vision, hearing, dexterity and use of both hands and legs appropriate to the duties to be performed.
