SUMMARY
Under the supervision of Recreation Coordinator, the incumbent devises and implements recreational activities for the City of Fountain.
GENERAL PURPOSE:
The purpose of the Recreation Assistant is to provide front office customer service functions and administrative support for the City of Fountain’s Recreation Service Department, including establishing contact with both internal and external customers, providing requested information or assistance concerning recreations services, posting payments, training staff, and supporting and adhering to all policies and procedures.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
This job/class works under close to general supervision, according to set procedures, but determines how or when to complete tasks.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Maintains and supports a positive, collaborative culture within the City organization as a whole, fully embracing the cultural and values statements espoused by the City.
- Organizes and supervises group activities for children, such as arts and crafts and/or sports activities.
- Keeps equipment inventory and submits orders for new and replacement items as needed.
- Registers participants for classes, processes payments for class fees; and checks in with participants.
- Prepares for and facilitates recreational programs, including the development of lesson plans and coaching drills.
- Assists in recruiting volunteers and participants for recreation programs.
- Assists with the general maintenance of facilities, such as: lining fields, setting bases, cleaning restrooms, and removing hazardous debris.
- Provides information and assistance at recreational areas, such as: ballfields, multiuse fields, parks, and playgrounds.
- Assists with special events such as: Movie Nights, Teen Programs, Adult Programs, and City-organized events.
- Maintains accurate records for: attendance, participation, and volunteer background checks.
- Assists with ensuring participant safety practices.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with citizens and co-workers.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Secures facilities as needed.
- Performs other duties and special projects as requested by supervisor.
Education and Experience:
- Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one year of college in Recreation, Program Management, or closely related field.
- Requires experience in recreation or closely related experience.
- Requires two (2) years’ experience in customer service or closely related experience.
Certificate or licenses:
- Requires a valid Colorado driver’s license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- CPR, First Aid, and AED certification.
- Experience working with people of all ages and backgrounds.
- Excellent communication: verbal, interpersonal, and public speaking skills
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office tools and applications.
- Knowledge of scheduling software.
- Able to obtain the following ICS Certifications: IS100.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Handles or uses machines, tools, equipment or work aides involving some latitude for judgment regarding attainment of a standard or in selecting appropriate items.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, dancing, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in an office environment and outside in the field. Will require working in inclement weather or on rugged terrain. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet in the office setting but relatively loud and somewhat chaotic in the field. Frequently encounters noise of office machines and conversation and may be subject to poorly ventilated conditions (gymnasiums.)
