Description : Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Streets Foreman or Superintendent the incumbent provides maintenance and repair to the infrastructure of the City of Fountain. This position conducts various semi-skilled and skilled maintenance functions involving the City’s infrastructure, equipment and facilities. The position often operates with minimal direct supervision and has a broad understanding of most maintenance methodologies required for this job. New tasks require instruction and supervision, but exposure may allow the individual to exercise judgment in determining appropriate work procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities
Operates heavy equipment including dump trucks with plows, loaders, sweepers, blades, and tractors with mowers.
Conducts infrastructure maintenance and expansion duties including asphalt overlay, traffic control striping, storm drainage maintenance and the like.
Conducts pre-operation maintenance checks on vehicles and may conduct operator designated maintenance and care of equipment within the department.
Repairs and builds signage, replaces and / or installs new signs.
Responds to emergency calls 24 hours per day and may perform related duties and / or organize and direct other performance depending on magnitude of requirements.
May assist in snow removal and sweeping duties and may assist in planning the maintenance routes and patterns.
Street Maintenance Worker II & III] Acts as a Lead person when required. Supervises summer, seasonal help and community service workers, and assists with employee training in the operation and safety of all departmental equipment.
Street Maintenance Worker I] Assists in the inspections on construction projects as needed
Street Maintenance Worker II & III] Conducts inspections on construction projects as needed.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with citizens and co-workers.
Mows and conducts other weed control and trash cleanup activities on properties bordering streets and roads, as well as other properties of the City.
Other duties and responsibilities as required.
Supervisor Duties
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Duties are conducted predominately in an out-of-door environment which includes exposure to extreme heat and cold or wet / humid conditions. Subject to loud noise and vibration, and maybe conditions including fumes, odors, dust, mists, and gases on a limited daily basis.
Encounters mechanical hazards on a daily basis. Occasionally, may be subjected to electrical hazardous and burns as well as working at heights above ground level while exposed to out-of-door conditions.
On a moderate basis may encounter hazards which could cause burns, including toxic / caustic chemicals.
Requirements : Qualifications
Maintenance Worker I
Requires High School Diploma, equivalent educational component, or demonstrated skills as would be expected from this level of education.
Requires six (6) months of heavy equipment and construction operations experience or closely related experience.
Requires a minimum Class B Commercial Driver License or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
Able to obtain the following ICS Certifications : IS100 & 700.
Requires First Aid and CPR Certification or the ability to obtain these certifications within ninety (90) days of hire.
Regulatory Signage and Traffic Control Device Certification preferred.
Maintenance Worker II
Requires High School Diploma, or GED, or specialized courses / training equivalent to completion of one year of continued education in construction, heavy equipment operation or closely related field.
Requires one (1) year of heavy equipment and construction operations experience or closely related experience.
Requires a minimum Class B Commercial Driver License with a P-2 tanker endorsement or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
Able to obtain the following ICS Certifications : IS100 & 700.
Requires First Aid and CPR Certification or the ability to obtain these certifications within ninety (90) days of hire.
Regulatory Signage and Traffic Control Device Certification preferred.
Maintenance Worker III
Requires High School Diploma, or GED, or specialized courses / training equivalent to completion of one year of continued education in construction, heavy equipment operation or closely related field.
Requires three (3) years of heavy equipment and construction operations experience or closely related experience.
Requires a minimum Class A Commercial Driver License with a P-2 tanker endorsement.
Able to obtain the following ICS Certifications : IS100 & 700.
Requires First Aid and CPR Certification.
Regulatory Signage and Traffic Control Device Certification preferred.
Required Capabilities
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Ability to proficiently read, speak, and understand English. Proficiency in non-English languages is highly valued.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills, analytical skills, statistical and mathematical abilities and interpersonal skills. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write complex reports and distill information for many audiences.
Position requires close, distance and peripheral vision.
Ability to hear an average conversational voice in a quiet room, using one or both ears, at a distance of six (6) feet. Ability to hear sounds and signals indicating work and safety necessities.
This position requires standing, walking and sitting for periods of time. Utilization of hands and fingers to operate office computer keyboard and equipment required. Must be able to reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel or crouch if needed. Must be able to exert between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
This position requires leading or handling machines, tools, equipment or work aids involving moderate latitude for judgment regarding attainment of a standard or in selecting appropriate items.
This position requires good proficiency in the use of computer software and applications, office equipment, and professional telephone use. The ability to adequately type quickly with few to no errors is also very important. This position will often require multi-tasking in the use of computer, phone, and office equipment while interacting with clients. Candidates for this position may be required to take and pass technology proficiency assessments prior to employment.
