Pay Range: $25.85/Hour- $28.10/Hour
Purpose of Job
Under limited supervision, is responsible for inspecting residential and commercial buildings for compliance with City, State, and Federal codes and regulations and responding to inquiries from developers, contractors, and the public regarding building code compliance issues.
Essential Job Duties
A. Conduct inspections of structures
- Reviews structural/architectural plans and specifications to determine scope of work being constructed in preparation for inspections.
- Performs commercial and residential building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical inspections as qualifications allow.
- Ensures that proper permits have been obtained and fees have been collected for scope of work observed.
- Coordinates activities with other City departments to ensure attainment of multi-department inspection objectives.
- Conducts special event related inspections to identify safety and code related issues.
- Provides information to the public, contractors, and developers regarding building code issues; interprets construction codes and ordinances.
B. Administrative
- Assists in receiving and processing permits by determining and collecting appropriate fees, providing information to customers, and receiving plans for review.
- Maintains a system of log sheets and files to track status of projects; files approved plans and specifications; enters pertinent information into computer system.
- Responds to telephone inquiries and prepares written correspondence.
- Maintains complete inspection records of all inspections and other activities.
C. Enforcement
- Acts as an officer of the court to write citations and notices of violation for routine municipal code violations.
- Appears in court to testify as required.
D. Completes Routine Plan Reviews
- As assigned, completes routine commercial plan reviews in area(s) of certification.
Qualifications
Education and Experience: The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through attainment of a Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year College or university; or two to three years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Certifications/Licenses:
Inspector II must have two sets of the following certifications from the International Code Council, Inc. and/or State Agency within 9 months of hire date:
Set I:
Commercial Building Inspector
Residential Building Inspector
Set II:
Commercial Plumbing Inspector
Residential Plumbing Inspector
Set III:
Commercial Mechanical Inspector
Residential Mechanical Inspector
Set IV:
Commercial Electrical Inspector
Residential Electrical Inspector
The Inspector must register the appropriate ICC certifications with the State of TN Fire Marshal’s Office to obtain Certified Building Inspector, Certified Plumbing Inspector, Certified Mechanical Inspector, and/or Certified Electrical Inspector and maintain these certifications through the required continuing education as required by law to be able to conduct these inspections.
