Traffic Signal Tech II: $25.82/hr - $28.10/hr
I. Purpose of Job
Under general supervision, installs and maintains traffic signalization and roadway lighting. The Traffic Signal Technician performs highly skilled advanced level work in the installation, maintenance, operations, and repair of electrical and electronic traffic signal control devices and various (ITS) Intelligent Transportation System components. Responsible for diagnosing and repairing defects in sophisticated Intelligent Transportation System traffic signal control system.
Traffic Signal Technician I
II. Essential Job Duties
A. Performs traffic signal and roadway lighting maintenance.
- Maintains roadway lights on city streets, parking areas and interstate including changing lamps, LEDs, installing new lights, ballasts, and poles.
- Monitor and maintain cloud-based flashing signals for school zones including changing lamps, installing cabinets, fuses, and load switches and timings.
- Maintains and installs sophisticated ITS vehicle detection equipment (radar, wireless, camera, loops)
- Computer programming of vehicle detection systems: MIOVISION (camera detection), WAVETRONIX (radar detection, SMARTMICRO (radar detection).
- Installation, preventive maintenance, operations, and repair of Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) and speed warning signs.
- Installation, preventative maintenance, operations, and repair of (PTZ) Pan Tilt Zoom cameras.
- (APS) Accessible Pedestrian Stations associated with the City's traffic signal system.
- Interpret electrical plans, code requirements, electronic schematics and diagrams for the installation and maintenance of the City's traffic signal system.
- Prepare reports and maintain accurate records regarding all installation, maintenance, and repair of the City's traffic signal system.
- Establish and maintain effective work relationships with private contractors and other departments.
- Respond to emergencies, outages and system failures including locating area/s affected, repairing defect, provide traffic control including the placement of safety cones or barricades.
- Must obtain and hold International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Tech I and Work Zone certifications.
- Equipment operator for Skid Steer, Forklift, Excavator, and other essential equipment used in installing and maintaining signal and lighting infrastructure.
B. Administrative
- Assists in the preparation of the annual budget and oversees expenditures for equipment and tools including maintaining inventory.

- Assist Installing fiber optic cable.
- Attends safety classes for continuing education for IMSA certifications.

- On-Call Designation: This position is considered an On-Call eligible position and rotation on an On-Call team is required.

V. Equipment Operated

Has extensive knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the City and Traffic Division practices as they pertain to the performance of duties related to the position. Has extensive knowledge of the processes involved in the functions and mechanics of traffic signals and signal timing; operations of closed loop systems; basic construction techniques, methods, equipment and tools; electrical circuits, schematics, and solid-state devices; and computer programming of technical data pertaining to the Traffic Division. Is knowledgeable of engineering principles and practices applied to traffic signal improvement projects. Can effectively communicate and interact with supervisors, and all other groups involved in the activities of the department. Has comprehensive knowledge of the terminology, principles, and methods utilized within the department. Is knowledgeable and proficient with computers. Can remain calm in emergencies.

Traffic Signal Technician I
Education and Experience: The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through attainment of a one-year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Certifications/Licenses:
- IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level I (within one year of employment)
- Work Zone Certification (within one year of employment)
- Class B CDL Driver's License (within 6 months of employment)
Traffic Signal Technician II
Education and Experience: The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through attainment of a one-year certificate from college or technical school; plus, two years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Certifications/Licenses:
- IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level I
- Work Zone Certification
- Class B CDL Driver's License
