JOB SUMMARY:
This position performs technical duties in the repair and maintenance of the city’s transportation system and appurtenances.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Performs daily inspections of vehicles and equipment.
- Operates dump truck and trailer, snow plow and salt spreader, garbage truck, and other equipment as needed.
- Loads and unloads gravel, dirt, timber, chemicals and other materials, tools, and equipment.
- Spreads asphalt and patches holes in street surfaces.
- Assists in set up of concrete forms and finishing of concrete.
- Digs shallow trenches in ditches; cleans catch basins, and storm sewer manholes.
- Trims trees, shrubs, and bushes within street right of ways and drainage easements.
- Assists with the construction of storm sewer lines and facilities.
- Picks up paper and debris on public property, streets, and in the cemetery.
- Performs other street and storm sewer maintenance duties.
- Operates chain saws, pumps, mixers, trimmers, tractors, and other equipment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
- Knowledge of the installation, repair, and maintenance of streets, curb and gutter, sidewalks and drainage systems.
- Knowledge of heavy equipment operation.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Skill in the confined space entry procedures
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Streets Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include city ordinances, city personnel policies, vehicle operations laws, safety rules, city construction standards, MUTCD guidelines and HRPDC guidelines. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related duties in construction and maintenance of the city’s transportation system. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to participate in the maintenance of the transportation system. Successful performance in this position contributes to the efficiency of system operations.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with other city personnel, contractors, vendors, and members of the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated
